Amazon Commits to More Rigorous Monitoring of Fake Reviews After UK Authority’s Probe

Amazon has vowed to enhance its monitoring of counterfeit reviews and take action against sellers who use these deceptive tactics to improve their product ratings, following an inquiry by the UK’s competition authority.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has declared that eliminating fake reviews is crucial due to their significant influence on consumer decisions.

Significant Reliance on Reviews by UK Consumers

Approximately 90% of shoppers in the UK base their buying decisions on reviews, with an estimated annual expenditure of £23 billion affected by these user-generated evaluations. Since April, there has been an explicit prohibition on fake reviews.

Sarah Cardell, CEO of the CMA, stated that Amazon’s new commitments would allow consumers to make purchases with increased confidence. She emphasized the importance of this move, noting the vast number of users on Amazon and the substantial impact that reviews and ratings have on consumer choices.

Amazon has pledged to improve its systems for detecting fake reviews and to eliminate “catalogue abuse.” This malpractice involves sellers taking reviews from successful products and misleadingly attributing them to different, unrelated items to artificially inflate their ratings.

Sellers engaging in catalogue abuse or fake review schemes may face severe penalties, including the possibility of being banned from selling on the platform.

Additionally, individuals who submit fake reviews, whether positive or negative, also risk being banned and having all their past reviews removed. Amazon will also streamline the process for customers to report suspicious or fake reviews.

These measures follow a 2021 investigation by the CMA into Amazon and Google about their handling of fake reviews. Earlier this year, Google also committed to taking action against habitual offenders.

The CMA now plans to examine if specialized review platforms, the businesses listed on them, and the reviewers themselves are adhering to the more stringent regulations recently enacted.

Under the new guidelines set by the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act of 2024, the CMA has the authority to make independent decisions on consumer law violations without needing to go through the court system.

The authority can directly address breaches of consumer law, including issuing fines, mandating business practice improvements, and requiring companies to compensate affected consumers.

Amazon has reported substantial efforts and resources dedicated to fighting fake reviews, employing teams of expert human investigators and advanced machine learning models that analyze thousands of data points. In 2024 alone, the company blocked 275 million fake reviews, asserting that “more than 99% of all products in our store contain only authentic reviews.”

A spokesperson emphasized the company’s proactive stance, stating, “We also suspend, ban, and take legal action against those who violate our policies and have teams dedicated to taking action against bad actors who attempt to solicit fake reviews for products.”
