Meta Abruptly Terminates Business Account and Contact List for Non-Compliance with Community Standards

As a mentor to a burgeoning young black entrepreneur, RM, I’ve witnessed an unsettling incident where his private and professional social media profiles were abruptly terminated by Meta, the parent company of Instagram. This unexpected action came without any prior warning, no means to challenge the decision, and seemingly without valid cause. RM had established two flourishing enterprises, one in apparel design and the other in organizing music events.

Just six days prior to the suspension, RM successfully sold 1,500 tickets for an electronic dance music event in London, primarily using Instagram as his business platform. Suddenly, he received a notification stating that his content violated Meta’s community guidelines concerning violence and incitement, though specific details were not disclosed.

Both his business account, which boasted 5,700 followers, and his personal account, encompassing nearly 4,000 contacts, were eradicated. This extensive network was his sole directory of social and professional connections, as he maintained no other backup contact list. Additionally, his device IP addresses were blocked, preventing him from creating new accounts.

From my observations of his content, nothing seemingly violent had been posted, except for toy weapons shown in a promotional video. It appears that an automated system might have misinterpreted his content, severely disrupting his life and livelihood.

The pivotal role that social media holds in the lives of the younger generation can often be perplexing to those accustomed to more traditional forms of communication like websites and physical contact books.

When I reached out to RM, now 21, he shared that several of his peers also experienced sudden shutdowns of their emerging businesses on Instagram, attributed to vague violations of the platform’s rules. “For individuals of my age, an Instagram account isn’t just a source of revenue; it’s part of our identity,” RM explained. “The abrupt deletion of my account has been devastating, particularly as no prior warning was provided, and I’m facing significant financial losses, a dire situation for someone from an inner-city, single-parent background.”

RM strongly refuted any allegations of posting content that could be considered violent or inciting. However, since the accounts are no longer accessible, I couldn’t verify this myself. I did, however, come across an interview with RM on a music-related website, which suggested that the nature of his involvement in the cyberpunk rave scene might have triggered the algorithm, with common terms in the genre like ‘drugs’, ‘sex’, and ‘kill’ potentially being misinterpreted.

Meta has remained tight-lipped about the exact reasons for the account closures, citing confidentiality, and has firmly stated there will be no reinstatement of the accounts nor any possibility for RM to recover his contacts. They also declined any on-the-record comments, although a press officer intimated the decision was final due to guideline breaches.

In terms of recourse, RM could request access to the data Meta holds on him, though this won’t restore his accounts, it might shed some light on the alleged infractions. Should Meta fail to comply, he has the option to file a complaint with the Information Commissioner’s Office.

RM has since purchased a new laptop in an effort to set up fresh accounts and rebuild his online presence. I have advised him—and would extend this advice generally—to always back up contact information and not to rely solely on a single, unaccountable platform for crucial business operations.

Currently, Meta is facing criticism for what many perceive as indiscriminate account suspensions by algorithms, with a petition on Change.org calling for more human oversight in these decisions attracting over 25,000 signatures.

Exclusion from Facebook

EM from West Sussex encountered significant issues after her Facebook account was compromised by a hacker who altered her login credentials, transitioning her account access to themselves. Despite her attempts to regain control, Facebook’s automated systems inadvertently sent recovery instructions to the hacker’s email. After regaining access, the hacker changed her account’s privacy settings from private to public, exposing years of personal data.

When EM tried to address the issue by creating a new account, Facebook responded by permanently shutting it down. She expressed frustration over the difficulty in reaching a human representative for assistance. Surprisingly, she found some solace in being disconnected from Facebook, enjoying the quiet after being cut off from the platform.

Meta did not provide a comment on this situation.
