Mary Beth Hurt Passes Away at 79

Mary Beth Hurt, renowned for her roles in movies like Interiors and The World According to Garp, has passed away due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 79.

Her family, including her daughter Molly Schrader and her husband, filmmaker Paul Schrader, shared the news through a combined Facebook update.

The announcement expressed, “She embraced multiple roles in life – an actress, a wife, a sister, a mother, an aunt, and a friend, performing each with elegance and fierce kindness. Despite our grief, we find solace in knowing that her suffering has ended and she rests peacefully with her sisters.”

Mary Beth Hurt, born Mary Beth Supinger, was previously married to actor William Hurt from 1971 until 1982 and debuted on Broadway in 1974. She received Tony nominations for her roles in plays like Crimes of the Heart, Trelawny of the Wells, and Benefactors. She also appeared in films directed by her second husband, Paul Schrader, namely Affliction (1997) and Light Sleeper (1992).

Her film career began with a significant role in Woody Allen’s 1978 drama Interiors, which drew critical acclaim. She was also featured in other notable films such as The World According to Garp (1982), Slaves of New York (1989), and both The Age of Innocence and Six Degrees of Separation in 1993.

In a 1989 interview with the New York Times, Hurt commented on her selective approach to choosing roles, stating, “Fifty percent of the film roles I receive are uninspiring. It’s not about the size of the role. They just lack substance. So, I only choose the interesting ones, unless I haven’t acted in a while, then I might accept a less appealing role.”

During a 2010 interview, she revealed her preference for ensemble casts over leading roles, explaining, “I’ve always found leading roles uncomfortable. I dislike the pressure; feeling that I need to perform well. Furthermore, I’ve always found supporting roles to be more intriguing, especially in my younger days when the leading roles tended to be unremarkable.”

Among her later projects were films such as Young Adult, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Lady in the Water, and Change in the Air. In 2023, Paul Schrader shared that Hurt had been moved to a memory care facility in New York.
