Neil Young Targets Donald Trump in New Track “Big Crime”
Neil Young has unveiled a new track titled “Big Crime,” directly criticizing former US President Donald Trump. The song continues Young’s history of opposing Trump, from legal action over Trump’s unauthorized use of his music at political events to public denunciations of his presidency.
The iconic Canadian-American musician, known for his outspoken nature, previously attempted to sue Trump for using his music at rallies, although he eventually withdrew the lawsuit. He has openly labeled Trump as “the worst president in the history of our great country.”
New Song Amplifies Critique
Young’s latest musical critique, “Big Crime,” features his band, Chrome Hearts, and was recorded during a soundcheck at a concert venue on Northerly Island in Chicago. The song, which is available on Young’s YouTube channel, delivers pointed criticism of Trump’s recent actions and past controversies.
In the song’s chorus, Young sings, “There’s big crime in DC at the White House,” referencing both Trump’s historical legal challenges and his recent policies in Washington DC. This line also serves as a sarcastic jab at Trump’s declared “crime emergency” in DC, where he took control over the local police force and deployed national guard troops, despite reports of a 30-year low in crime from the city’s police department and US attorney Matthew Graves.
The lyrics further express Young’s disdain for authoritarian measures: “Don’t need no fascist rules / don’t want no fascist schools / don’t want soldiers walking on the streets,” and calls for political cleansing: “Got to get the fascists out / got to clean the White House out … no more money to the fascists, the billionaire fascists.” Young’s sentiments reflect a deep frustration with what he perceives as a rise in fascist tendencies, directly challenging Trump’s slogan by stating, “No more great again.”
Previous Musical Protests Against Trump
This is not the first time Young has used his music to speak out against Trump. He updated his 2006 song “Lookin’ for a Leader” in 2020 to include references to Trump, criticizing his leadership and urging action against racial injustice. The updated song portrays Trump as ignoring the significance of Black lives and being generally unfit for leadership.
The original version of “Lookin’ for a Leader” was aimed at then-president George W. Bush and hinted at Barack Obama as a potential leader. This track was part of Young’s “Living With War” album, which was a vehement critique of Bush’s presidency, highlighted by the direct call to action in “Let’s Impeach the President.”
Trump’s presidential campaign in 2015 saw him using Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World,” a choice that was later dropped after Young expressed his support for Bernie Sanders and criticized the song’s use in Trump’s campaign. Despite dropping the song initially, it and “Devil’s Sidewalk” were later used at a 2020 rally, leading to Young filing a lawsuit. Although Young eventually dismissed the lawsuit, he made his position clear that he did not want his work associated with Trump’s campaign.
Having become a dual US-Canadian citizen in 2020, Young has expressed concerns about potential repercussions for his outspoken views, fearing that his criticisms could lead to being barred from entering the US or worse.
Neil Young’s commitment to using his music as a form of protest continues to make waves, as he challenges political figures and policies through his art, maintaining his role as a fervent advocate for justice and integrity in governance.
