Key Contractors Selected for Pentagon’s Golden Dome Program
Major defense companies like BAE Systems, Booz Allen Hamilton, L3Harris, and General Atomics have been chosen among over a thousand firms to potentially participate in the Pentagon’s Golden Dome missile defense shield initiative and other related projects.
On a recent Tuesday, the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) disclosed the commencement of the first phase of staggered awards under its new contract termed the Scalable Homeland Innovative Enterprise Layered Defense, or SHIELD. This contract, which operates on an indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity basis, has the potential to extend up to $151 billion over the next ten years, according to the MDA’s announcement.
Initial Phase of SHIELD Awards
MDA spokesperson Mark Wright communicated via email with Defense News, explaining that these initial SHIELD awards aim to create a pool of capable contractors ready to take on projects like the Golden Dome. Companies listed under the SHIELD contract are set to compete for upcoming tasks through specific orders, as per Wright’s statement.
Wright emphasized that these initial awards do not correspond to any specific project commitments, including the Golden Dome. Instead, they mark the beginning of a broader strategy to establish a qualified group of SHIELD indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract holders.
Further activities to finalize the source selection for the SHIELD IDIQ are ongoing, which include discussions with bidders and the potential for additional awards. Only after these steps will the MDA proceed with soliciting firm requirements through task or delivery orders. Wright also noted that while the Golden Dome requirements could be handled under SHIELD, the contract is not limited exclusively to this project.
Elbit America Among Prospective Contractors
Elbit America, which is the U.S. branch of the Israeli defense contractor Elbit Systems, is also included in the roster of potential contractors. It is worth noting that Elbit Systems is a primary contractor for Israel’s Iron Dome, which served as an inspiration for the U.S. Golden Dome system following an initiative by former President Donald Trump.
The recent announcement from the Pentagon regarding the SHIELD contract highlights how this new framework will provide the MDA and other Defense Department entities with a versatile platform to quickly compete orders.
The MDA received a total of 2,463 bids for the SHIELD contract, indicating strong competition and interest within the defense contracting community.
