This sensation is perhaps most profound at the esteemed LW Theatres, operated by the iconic composer Andrew Lloyd Webber. This group includes London’s most beloved theatrical venues such as His Majesty’s Theatre, The London Palladium, and Theatre Royal Drury Lane, among others. Upon entering these halls, one common sight is unmistakable amidst the bustling crowd or welcoming you at the entrance: a striking flash of red. These are the renowned Red Coat butlers.

Jonny Weston, a Red Coat at LW Theatres for the past ten years, is dedicated to providing a peerless VIP experience. “The essence of being a Red Coat butler revolves around guest care,” explains Weston. “Our primary role is to craft personalized experiences for our visitors, ensuring they leave with unforgettable memories.”

A typical day for a Red Coat begins with the setting up of VIP areas, preparing glossy event programs, arranging for premium champagne, snacks, and ice-cream during intermissions. Once the doors of the theatre open, the immersive experience for guests starts right away.

“I personally greet guests and lead them to their designated areas: a reserved section, a private suite, or the Royal Retiring Room,” says Weston. These spaces are as luxurious as they sound, with the Royal Retiring Room at His Majesty’s Theatre having hosted royalty and offering secluded comfort and optimal viewing spots.

Weston finds immense joy in interacting with guests, taking pride in his role. “My first question usually is whether they’ve travelled far to join us. It’s exciting because we’re in the heart of the West End, a cornerstone of British culture. Our guests come from all corners of the globe,” he shares. Regardless of their origin, the aim remains consistent: to enhance their theatre experience in every possible way.

Lloyd Webber himself has been a significant influence on Weston, sparking his interest in theatre and performance. Growing up, Weston felt disconnected, without a clear passion or activity. “As a kid, I found myself without a real hobby; I wasn’t athletic, and I struggled. Traditionally, girls took dance classes and boys played football,” he recounts.

Weston’s passion for theatre ignited after watching the BBC TV talent show Any Dream Will Do, where Lloyd Webber sought an actor for the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. “Seeing men actively pursuing stage careers changed my perspective, from believing that only certain activities were appropriate for men to realizing performance was a viable path,” he explains.

His journey led him to train as a performer. However, it was his stint in front of house at the Adelphi Theatre, another of LW Theatres’ properties, where he first saw a Red Coat. Intrigued by the elegance and role of the Red Coat following a bespoke guest request, Weston decided, “That’s what I want to do.”

Weston progressed from front of house to becoming a fully-fledged Red Coat at the Adelphi Theatre. His training was comprehensive, focusing on meticulous attention to detail—from maintaining the pristine condition of his uniform to ensuring every guest felt like they received the star treatment.

For Weston, the theatre serves as a sanctuary from the external world, and his role is to enhance that escape. “You step into the theatre to leave the outside world behind, to live in the moment without distractions like mobile phones. My job is to enrich this experience, to make it memorable,” he reflects.

Over the years, Weston has hosted numerous guests, including members of the royal family and celebrities like Pierce Brosnan, Antonio Banderas, and Sara Bareilles. Yet, one guest remains particularly memorable. “An American woman visited alone, vibrant and full of life. When I asked why she came alone, she replied, ‘Jonny, I have six months to live. Why wouldn’t I go out with a bang?’ She was unforgettable,” he recalls.

For Weston, wearing the Red Coat is not just a job; it’s a symbol of pride and a role that has allowed him to feel at home in the world’s most prestigious theatres.
