Larger airports may have multiple parking options – Heathrow, for instance, has 11 official parking lots. The prices can vary significantly depending on their proximity to the terminals or whether an attendant parks your car for you.

For instance, parking at Stansted Airport for a week in August is currently priced at £138 for ‘meet and greet’ service at the terminal, £113 for a short-stay about five minutes away on foot, and £98 for long-stay parking.

Using comparison websites can often lead to savings, and MoneySavingExpert occasionally provides discount codes.

For example, booking the same week at Stansted via the Holiday Extras site costs £111 for ‘meet and greet’, £96 for short-stay, and £83 for long-stay. It’s worthwhile to compare rates on other sites like FHR, SkyParkSecure, and Airport Parking and Hotels to find the best deals.

Understand the Fine Print

Travel plans can be unpredictable, so it’s important to know if you can cancel your booking. Some providers allow cancellations right up until the scheduled arrival time.

Official parking at Heathrow offers cancellations up to two hours before without a fee, while Stansted allows cancellations up to 72 hours before when booked directly. Some comparison sites may include free cancellation with their bookings, or you might have to pay an additional fee for that flexibility.

Certain airports allow a grace period if your return flight is delayed, enabling you to pick up your car a few hours later without extra charges. However, it’s crucial to verify as policies may vary even within the same airport across different parking facilities.

When using long- or medium-stay parking, consider the transit time to the terminal. Although shuttle buses might run every 10 or 15 minutes, there could be a queue, possibly causing you to miss the first bus.

For example, at London Gatwick, the long-stay car park is a 10-minute bus ride from the terminal with buses arriving every 10 minutes. At Stansted, buses come every 15 minutes.

However, it’s essential to research any third-party parking provider. Which? uncovered that some private ‘meet and greet’ services, which involve an operator meeting you at the terminal to take your car to an off-site location, had issues with petty theft and misuse of vehicles.

Alternatively, you can avoid traditional car parks by parking your vehicle in a private space, such as in front of someone’s home or on their land.

Several websites like Justpark and Parklet list available parking spots near airports. For Stansted, a week’s parking in August ranges from £49 to £97 in areas close to the airport on Justpark. However, you may need to factor in the cost of a taxi from where you park, and security might not be as robust as in a dedicated car park.

One of the least expensive methods to reach the airport might be getting a lift from someone else. However, this isn’t always cost-free due to high drop-off charges at many airports.

At Southend airport, a mere five minutes for pick-up or drop-off costs £7. If you exceed that time limit, the fee jumps to £15 (for up to 30 minutes). According to research by Select Car Leasing, airports like Leeds Bradford International, Gatwick, and Bristol charge £7 for a 10-minute drop-off.
