Announcement on U.S. Space Command’s New Location
The Trump administration is set to declare on Tuesday that the U.S. Space Command will be established in Alabama. This decision reverses a previous commitment under the Biden administration to maintain the command’s temporary base in Colorado, as reported by two sources familiar with the upcoming announcement.
President Trump is scheduled to make this announcement on Tuesday afternoon, revealing the new location for the Space Command. The sources, who requested anonymity, shared this information in advance of the official declaration. The Pentagon has prepared a website to stream the announcement live, highlighting the event as the “U.S. Space Command HQ Announcement.”
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt hinted at an upcoming significant announcement from the Department of Defense, heightening anticipation around what the President will disclose.
The primary roles of the Space Command include overseeing operations such as supporting satellite-based navigation, facilitating troop communications, and issuing alerts on missile launches.
Competition Between Alabama and Colorado
There has been a long-standing competition between Alabama and Colorado to host the Space Command, a project considered vital for local economic prospects and a symbol of political prestige. Officials from both states have vigorously claimed that their state offers the most suitable location for the command center.
Huntsville, Alabama, often referred to as Rocket City due to its significant contributions to the U.S. space efforts, is home to several key military and space institutions. These include the Army’s Redstone Arsenal and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, as well as the Army’s Space and Missile Defense Command.
This announcement brings to a close a four-year period of uncertainty regarding the permanent location of the Space Command.
In 2021, the Air Force named the Army Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville as the favored site for the U.S. Space Command. This decision was based on several criteria, including infrastructure capabilities, community support, and cost-effectiveness to the Defense Department, following evaluations conducted in six different states.
However, in a significant policy reversal in 2023, former President Joe Biden declared that the Space Command would permanently remain in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where it had been temporarily stationed. The Biden administration, aligned with Democratic views, argued that keeping the command in Colorado Springs was crucial to avoid any disruption in operational readiness.
Despite a review by the Defense Department inspector general which did not conclusively determine the reasons for choosing Colorado over Alabama, the move back to Alabama had long been anticipated under Trump, a Republican with substantial support in the state.
