Trump’s Tariff Plan Could Destroy UK Cinema: Industry Experts Alarmed

The potential imposition of 100% tariffs on films produced outside the United States by Donald Trump poses a significant risk to the UK film industry, with officials urging that the matter be addressed urgently in trade negotiations with the White House.

UK authorities and key figures from the nation’s lucrative film production sector are set to convene soon to deliberate on Trump’s alarming proposal. This comes after his repeated vows to revive Hollywood’s former glory.

Trump recently declared his plan to levy a tax on all films made abroad, blaming foreign incentives for the rapid decline of the American film industry. The UK, known for its attractive tax rebates to filmmakers, stands to be significantly affected.

The US president has already tasked the Department of Commerce and the US Trade Representative to start implementing the proposed tariffs, labeling the issue a “national security threat” on his Truth Social platform due to other countries’ efforts to lure film productions.

“Our film industry is being decimated,” Trump stated to the press, asserting that other countries have effectively ‘stolen’ Hollywood’s business.

This move has sparked immediate concern in the UK, which frequently hosts major Hollywood projects such as Barbie, parts of the Mission: Impossible series, and Disney’s Star Wars movies. More significant productions are planned in the UK, including Star Wars: Starfighter.

Philippa Childs, head of Bectu, the union for the creative industries, expressed that these tariffs could be devastating, especially following the setbacks from Covid and recent industry slowdowns, affecting countless freelancers in the UK’s film sector.

A prominent individual in the UK’s creative industry cautioned, “If this tariff becomes a reality, it could potentially devastate the British film industry and its workforce.”

Last year, international feature film production in the UK generated £1.9 billion, with high-end TV production adding another £2.8 billion. US investment in UK films saw an 83% increase from the previous year.

Adrian Wootton, CEO of the British Film Commission, acknowledged the concerns but emphasized the importance of understanding more about the tariff details.

Senior UK politicians are urging that protection of the film industry be a priority in trade discussions with the US, despite indications from sources that reaching an agreement with Trump may not be a primary focus.

Caroline Dinenage, chair of the culture, media, and sport committee, stressed the committee’s prior warnings against taking the UK’s position as a top filming destination for granted. She pointed out that Trump’s announcement underscores the urgency of these concerns.

James Frith, a Labour committee member, argued that such tariffs would not only undermine British jobs and creativity but would also adversely affect US studios and audiences that depend on UK production expertise.

Industry experts are uncertain about how such tariffs would be implemented, suggesting that they would ultimately penalize US studios by decreasing production and employment.

Resistance to Trump’s tariff proposal is also emerging within the US, with California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office stating that the president lacks the authority to enforce such tariffs.

In the face of these developments, a UK government spokesperson reiterated that discussions about an economic agreement with the US are ongoing. They emphasized a methodical approach to negotiations, aiming to reduce pressures on UK businesses and consumers.

Meanwhile, the White House has stated that no definite decisions regarding the new tariffs have been made, with all options under consideration to address Trump’s concerns about the state of Hollywood.
