Elbit Systems to Equip Israeli Aircraft with Laser Weapons
JERUSALEM — Elbit Systems has announced its commitment to develop laser weaponry for the Israeli Air Force, which will be mounted on both fighter jets and military helicopters, as confirmed by the company on Tuesday.
In a recent financial disclosure for the year 2025, Elbit shared its intentions to pursue this advanced armament technology, although specific technical details and projected timelines for deployment remain confidential.
Amidst the ongoing cooperative military efforts with the United States in the operation named “Epic Fury,” aimed at countering missile and drone attacks from Iran and Lebanon, Israel has placed an order for this new system.
Israel is already equipped with the Iron Beam, a ground-based laser defense system developed by Rafael, which became fully operational at the end of 2025. This system utilizes laser cannons that can deliver between 10 to 100 kilowatts of power, covering distances from 2 to 10 kilometers.
While the Iron Beam is noted for its cost-effective interception capabilities, it does encounter challenges related to the atmospheric conditions prevalent on the ground.
Advantages of Aerial Laser Systems
Bezhalel Machlis, president and CEO of Elbit Systems, explained the strategic benefits of deploying high-power lasers on aircraft. “Positioning lasers above the clouds helps us mitigate several ground-level challenges such as weather, dust, and air turbulence,” Machlis stated. “This not only allows for greater operational ranges but also enhances the effectiveness of the system, enabling us to neutralize threats before they reach our borders.”
Machlis further disclosed that the engineering efforts to adapt this technology for aerial use are well underway. “Once this solution is fully developed and operational, I am confident it will revolutionize the way nations combat drone swarms and other emerging threats,” he added.
Additionally, Machlis mentioned the potential offensive capabilities of the high-power laser system, suggesting that its applications extend beyond mere defense mechanisms.
