Israel enters final phase to deliver Arrow-3 missile shield to Germany

Israel and Germany Initiate Arrow-3 Missile Defense System Transfer

The Israeli Defense Ministry has recently disclosed that Israel and Germany have commenced the initial phases of transferring the Arrow-3 missile defense system to the German military, expected to complete in the forthcoming months.

A recent agency release highlighted a “high-level coordination meeting” that took place in Germany, which saw the participation of key figures such as Moshe Patel, the director of the Israel Missile Defense Organization, Colonel Carsten Koepper, who leads the Arrow 3 Program in Germany, and Yaakov Galifat, a general manager at Israel Aerospace Industries.

Additionally, the meeting included representatives from Israeli firms ELTA and Elbit Systems, alongside German technology consultant IABG and missile manufacturer MBDA, further indicating the collaborative effort involved in this endeavor.

Historic Defense Agreement Between Israel and Germany

The transaction concerning the Arrow-3 system represents the largest defense agreement in Israeli history, valued at $3.5 billion. This significant deal received the green light from the U.S. government in August 2023, with the U.S. being a co-developer of the system, and achieved its final approval by the end of November 2023.

The acquisition by Germany is set against the backdrop of increasing tensions in Ukraine due to Russian military activities, prompting German defense officials to bolster their national defense capabilities in anticipation of potential threats. The first batch of Arrow-3 defense systems is scheduled to be delivered to the German military by the end of 2025.

Operational Successes of the Arrow-3 System

The Arrow-3 system successfully executed its first operational intercept on November 9, 2023, targeting a ballistic missile launched by the Houthi rebels from Yemen.

Moreover, the system demonstrated its capability to handle multiple incoming threats on April 14, 2024, during an attack by Iran on Israel. During this incident, the Arrow-3 system intercepted several Iranian ballistic missiles, as confirmed by the Israeli government.

The Arrow-3 system is designed to intercept ballistic missiles outside the earth’s atmosphere, utilizing a direct hit-and-destroy approach based on kinetic energy. This method contrasts with its predecessor, the Arrow-2 system, which employs a proximity fuze and explosive charge to neutralize targets. The Arrow-3 is not only faster but also lighter and smaller, weighing nearly half as much as the Arrow-2.
