Lockheed launches Hellfire missile from 10-foot cargo container

Lockheed Martin Unveils New Missile Launcher

On Tuesday, Lockheed Martin announced the successful deployment of a Hellfire missile from its innovative Grizzly launcher, set within a standard 10-foot shipping container.

The innovative Grizzly launcher integrates aspects of Lockheed’s M299 missile launch platforms, offering three different configuration options. It is capable of launching both Hellfire missiles and Joint Air-to-Ground Missiles. Employed by the U.S. Army and Navy, as well as various international allies, Hellfire missiles are designed to autonomously track and engage targets and are deployable from more than 15 different platforms in air, land, and sea settings.

“The initial live fire demonstration, occurring only six months following the start of research and development, showcases our commitment to rapidly deliver a mobile and flexible launcher that can address emerging threats,” stated Randy Crites, vice president of Lockheed Martin Advanced Programs.

The Grizzly launcher is constructed using inexpensive, commercially available materials, allowing it to be easily transported using a range of standard commercial vehicles and equipment such as trucks, aircraft, and ships.

This development is particularly timely as the Navy is currently exploring the use of containerized payloads. These systems could be mounted on unmanned surface vessels to enhance their offensive capabilities and operational flexibility in maritime environments.
