Cofepris alerta sobre publicidad engañosa de Tiroidex; advierte riesgos a la salud

According to the health authority, this product is marketed as a dietary supplement, yet its “misleading and exaggerated” advertising violates the law by promoting it as a treatment with nutritional or stimulating properties without regulatory support.

MEXICO CITY (apro) – The Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) has issued a health alert due to the deceptive advertising of the product Tiroidex, which is sold as a dietary supplement and falsely claims to have preventive, therapeutic, and rehabilitative qualities that are not consistent with its actual function.

Based on a technical-documentary analysis by the health authority, this product is sold with the premise of being a dietary supplement, but its “erroneous and exaggerated” advertising breaches the General Health Law by promoting it as a treatment endowed with nutritional or stimulating capacities without having the necessary regulatory backing.

What is Tiroidex?

The product is available in various forms, including 500-milligram tablets and an 80-milliliter extract. Its labeling mentions ingredients such as seaweed, radish, nettle, cornstarch, and magnesium stearate.

Cofepris has highlighted that the label does not specify the quantities of these ingredients and has warned that the consumption of Tiroidex poses a significant risk to the public due to the following reasons:

  • Lack of scientific evidence: the manufacturer has not provided scientific studies to guarantee the safety, quality, or efficacy of the product to Cofepris.
  • Potential side effects: without scientific evidence, there is a risk that the product could cause harmful side effects when combined with other medications.
  • Unknown origins: there is no information about the origin of the ingredients, the sanitary conditions of the raw materials, or their manufacturing, storage, and transportation processes.

Health Authority Recommendations

In light of this product’s availability on e-commerce platforms, websites, and parcel services, Cofepris urges the public not to purchase, consume, or recommend the use of Tiroidex.

The agency emphasizes that dietary supplements are intended solely to increase or supplement dietary intake and should never replace medical treatment.

If you are experiencing any health issues, it is advised to consult a specialist for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment, avoiding the use of this product.

Furthermore, the public is encouraged to report any sales of Tiroidex in physical stores or online portals.

“Cofepris will continue its sanitary control actions and will promptly inform the public if new evidence is identified, with the goal of preventing health risks arising from products (…) that fail to comply with current sanitary legislation,” the authority concluded.
