Unexpected Dismissal of High-Ranking U.S. General in Europe
The U.S. Army has recently announced the sudden dismissal of the three-star general in charge of their European forces, according to an official statement released on Monday.
Lieutenant General Charles Costanza, who was at the helm of V Corps, has been relieved of his duties. The specific details surrounding the timing and reasons for his removal were not disclosed by the Army. However, they did state that the issue has been “referred to the appropriate authority in accordance with Army regulations.”
Interim Leadership and Upcoming Command Changes
In the interim, Brigadier General John B. Mountford, previously the deputy commanding general for readiness at V Corps, has taken over as the acting commanding general.
The Army revealed last week that Major General Thomas M. Feltey, recently approved for promotion to lieutenant general, is slated to officially take command of V Corps at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
General Costanza’s Military Background
Prior to his leadership role at V Corps, which began in April 2024, Costanza served as the Deputy Commanding General of U.S. Army Europe-Africa and was the commander of the 3rd Infantry Division. His military career started in 1991 when he graduated as an armor officer from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
V Corps, under the leadership of individuals like Costanza, plays a crucial role in overseeing ground forces in Europe, particularly along NATO’s eastern borders. The Corps is integral in collaborating with allied forces to enhance regional defense strategies, including counter-drone systems and long-range artillery operations. Since its reactivation in October 2020, Costanza was only the second individual to command the Corps.
Clarification on the Nature of the Dismissal
An Army official assured the Military Times that the decision to remove Costanza was not influenced by political factors nor was it related to actions by the Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. This comes at a time when the Pentagon is experiencing numerous high-level leadership changes, with Hegseth having replaced or dismissed at least a dozen senior leaders since taking office.
This shakeup follows another high-profile change in July when General Christopher Donahue, former leader of the XVIII Airborne Corps and the 82nd Airborne Division, unexpectedly relinquished his command of U.S. Army Europe and Africa, with no explanation provided by the Army at that time.
