General Christopher Donahue Steps Down as Commander of U.S. Forces in Europe and Africa
On Thursday, General Christopher Donahue ended his tenure as the commander of U.S. Army forces in Europe and Africa, based in Wiesbaden, Germany. His period in command, lasting only 18 months, was shorter than anticipated.
The U.S. Army has not disclosed the specifics behind the change in leadership. In the interim, Major General Christopher Norrie will take over the responsibilities as the acting commander. This arrangement will remain until a new commander is officially appointed and confirmed by the Senate and the President, as stated by the Army.
During his farewell, General Donahue expressed deep appreciation for his team, stating, “I love this team — it has been the honor of a lifetime to be a part of it. I’m proud of what we built and I have absolute confidence in what you will build next.” He added, “So, when people ask me, ‘Hey CD, what was it like to be a part of United States Army Europe and Africa?’ I only have to tell them how proud and unbelievably grateful I am to have been a part of the United States Army’s premier warfighting headquarters.”
General Donahue, a graduate of West Point, had previously led the XVIII Airborne Corps and the 82nd Airborne Division. Notably, in 2021, he was in charge of the U.S. military’s withdrawal from Afghanistan.
A notable image capturing General Donahue boarding the last C-17 aircraft out of Kabul, taken with night vision equipment, has become a symbolic representation of the end of the long-standing conflict in Afghanistan.
The departure of Donahue is part of broader changes in leadership at the Pentagon. Since taking office, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has initiated the removal or replacement of at least twelve high-ranking officials.
