Joel Souza, a 51-year-old filmmaker with grey hair, expressed his discomfort with firearms from his home in Pleasanton, California. “I was not raised around guns and I really dislike the culture surrounding them,” he stated. “The mere thought of handling a gun is quite repulsive to me.”
Tragic Incident on the Set of ‘Rust’
In October 2021, while working on his sixth film, a western titled ‘Rust’, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, a tragic accident occurred involving the film’s lead, Alec Baldwin. During a rehearsal, Baldwin accidentally discharged a gun that was supposed to be loaded with blanks, but contained a live round. The incident resulted in the death of Ukrainian cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and also injured Souza, who was struck in the shoulder by the same bullet.
The Immediate Aftermath and Legal Proceedings
Reflecting on the moment, Souza recalled not knowing if he would survive. “It felt like I was on the ground for five minutes, although it turned out to be half an hour,” he shared. Both he and Hutchins were quickly transported for medical care, with Hutchins airlifted and Souza taken by ambulance. Following the incident, a flurry of blame and multiple criminal charges ensued, alongside an official report criticizing the film’s producers for their negligence regarding gun safety. Baldwin eventually reached a settlement with Hutchins’ family, who stated that they believed Halyna’s death was a tragic accident. During the trials, Baldwin’s involuntary manslaughter charge was dismissed due to mishandling of evidence, whereas the film’s prop armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, received an 18-month prison sentence. Dave Halls, the assistant director, entered a plea bargain and was convicted for negligent use of a firearm.
Resuming Filming ‘Rust’
Despite the tragedy, filming for ‘Rust’ resumed 18 months later, a decision supported by Hutchins’ family. Souza, initially hesitant, felt compelled to return. “The thought of someone else finishing it didn’t sit right with me,” he explained. Upon returning, Souza ensured that everyone adhered strictly to his vision for the film to avoid previous disagreements, particularly those involving Baldwin.
Emotional and Physical Recovery
Directing Baldwin again proved to be an emotionally taxing experience for Souza. “I was emotionally unstable throughout the filming process,” he admitted. Physically, he faced challenges too, with his therapist setting a goal of restoring up to 70% of his shoulder’s range of motion, reminding him of the physical limitations at his age.
‘Rust’ Nears Release
Now, nearly two and a half years since the accident, ‘Rust’ is set for release. The film, which was partially re-shot by Bianca Cline after Hutchins’ untimely death, has been lauded for its visual quality. Souza was adamant about hiring a female cinematographer from the beginning, which led him to Hutchins. He recalled facing skepticism about a woman shooting a western, to which he defiantly responded by focusing exclusively on female cinematographers.
The Controversial Aftermath and Legacy
Despite rumors dismissing ‘Rust’ as a low-quality production, the film explores deep themes of guilt and redemption, drawing parallels with Clint Eastwood’s ‘Unforgiven’. Baldwin’s portrayal of the troubled outlaw Harland Rust provides a complex layer to the film, separate from the real-life tragedy. Souza opted not to include the scene of the fatal shooting, focusing instead on maintaining the essence of the film while acknowledging its painful backdrop.
Souza remains reflective about the entire ordeal, expressing a profound sadness over the incident and its implications. “You revisit every decision made that day,” he remarked, wishing he had never written the movie due to the catastrophic butterfly effect it triggered.
Despite his efforts to contribute positively to the film industry’s safety standards, Souza has observed little change. “People think such accidents couldn’t happen to them,” he noted, recounting a recent incident where live ammunition was found on another set. This sentiment was echoed by a veteran cinematographer who expressed that many still believe Souza’s team was merely unlucky.
