A$AP Rocky’s Long-Awaited Return to the Music Scene
After an eight-year hiatus, A$AP Rocky, the once and likely future luminary of New York’s rap scene, has finally released a new album. In the fast-paced world of hip-hop, where even top-tier artists like his peer Tyler, the Creator drop several albums within a single year, Rocky’s prolonged absence has been notable. Since his 2018 album Testing, Kanye West has undergone a significant transformation, adopting a new religious persona, shifting his political views, and releasing five albums. Despite not releasing music, Rocky has remained in the public eye due to his high-profile relationship with Rihanna, with whom he now shares three children, and a legal victory that saw him acquitted from a potentially lengthy prison sentence for a firearms charge. Moreover, his ventures into acting have been successful, with notable roles alongside Rose Byrne in the critically acclaimed dark comedy If I Had Legs I’d Kick You and with Denzel Washington in Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest.
Rocky has been relatively quiet on the musical front, apart from occasional singles like his collaboration with Tame Impala on Sundress. This sparse output has left fans yearning for more, especially as his partner Rihanna has also taken a lengthy break from music. Testing included the successful track “Praise the Lord (Da Shine)” featuring Skepta, but it generally did not resonate well with fans or critics, who missed the vibrant energy of his earlier work. This left Rocky at a critical juncture in his career, facing a decision between continuing his experimental approach or returning to his roots in more mainstream rap.
Exploring Dual Paths in ‘Don’t Be Dumb’
Don’t Be Dumb, Rocky’s fourth studio album, ambitiously attempts to address both directions. Despite its hour-long duration, the album is energetic and swift, shedding the heavy avant-garde influences of Testing and revitalizing the bold, provocative spirit evident in his 2013 major-label debut, Long.Live.A$AP. However, the album isn’t without its flaws; some tracks suffer from lackluster lyrics and others from an excess of production elements, suggesting that a more concise approach might have benefited the project. Despite these issues, the album is engaging and enjoyable, showcasing a diverse range of guest artists from Hans Zimmer to Tyler, the Creator, and indie artist Jessica Pratt, with Rocky firmly at the center of it all.
Rocky’s undeniable charm shines throughout the album. Stole Ya Flow is a playful jab at Drake, and it’s clear Rocky enjoys the banter, evidenced by lyrics that touch humorously on cosmetic surgery—a topic Drake has publicly denied undergoing. On the track Playa, Rocky adopts a conversational tone, giving love advice with a hint of ruthlessness: “No receipts, don’t text.” In Air Force (Black Demarco), he delivers verses over a raw, glitchy beat reminiscent of Playboi Carti’s style, followed by a smooth transition into a relaxed, psychedelic rock sound, cleverly breaking the fourth wall and challenging his critics.
While some lyrics might seem uninspired—such as the commentary on society’s obsession with social media validation in Helicopter—these are balanced by more dynamic sections of the album. In collaborations like the Gorillaz feature on Whiskey, Rocky’s verses meander into a stream of consciousness, occasionally bordering on lethargy, yet this is counteracted by more energetic and engaging moments. Overall, Don’t Be Dumb marks a robust return to form, blending playfulness with a matured edge that might just reestablish Rocky’s hold on the rap genre. It’s a welcome comeback for fans who were left wanting more after Testing.
