ROME — Bangladesh has initiated a formal process to discuss acquiring the Eurofighter aircraft by signing a Letter of Intent. This move could position Bangladesh as the inaugural nation outside of Europe and the Middle East to secure this type of fighter jet.
The negotiations for this acquisition will be conducted between the Bangladesh Air Force and Leonardo, an Italian company responsible for promoting the Eurofighter in Asia.
Details of the Proposed Deal
According to the Bangladesh Air Force, the agreement outlined in the Letter of Intent involves Leonardo supplying Eurofighter Typhoon jets. Reports from local media indicate that Bangladesh may purchase up to 16 of these aircraft, which are collaboratively manufactured by a consortium from Italy, Germany, the U.K., and Spain.
The signing of the LOI took place at the Bangladesh Air Force headquarters with key attendees including the Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan, and the Italian Ambassador to Bangladesh, Antonio Alessandro.
Significance of the Acquisition
Should this transaction be finalized, it would represent Bangladesh’s most substantial acquisition of a Western-manufactured fighter jet to date. The Bangladesh Air Force has also considered the Chinese Chengdu J-10C as another potential option.
Earlier in the year, a delegation from the Bangladesh Air Force had visited Leonardo’s facilities in Turin, Italy, to conduct test flights of the Eurofighter. It’s important to note that Bangladesh’s air fleet already includes AW109 and AW139 helicopters, which are also products of Leonardo.
Leonardo is actively promoting the Eurofighter in other regions as well, including potential sales of 32 jets to the Philippines and campaigns in Poland.
As of now, 769 Eurofighters have been ordered globally, and the aircraft is currently in service in ten countries: the U.K., Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Oman.
