Dream State by Eric Puchner review – an epic tale of paradise lost

Eric Puchner, an American novelist, has outdone himself with his latest work, a grand and sweeping novel that mirrors the expansive vistas of Montana. Titled “Dream State,” the story begins in 2004, capturing a moment with a young woman diving into a pristine lake, surrounded by the majestic Salish mountains, just one month before her wedding day. The narrative stretches across years, moving from past to present and into the future, weaving in and out of the lives of its central characters as they experience success, failure, love, heartbreak, and personal evolution.

The young woman is named Cece. She is visiting the lakeside home of her fiancé, Charlie Margolis, a cardiac anaesthesiologist. Despite the distant hum of Route 30 traffic, the setting is almost utopian, filled with ancient apple orchards, perpetually fruiting raspberry bushes, and pine-covered mountains. For Cece, this place is unparalleled anywhere on Earth.

Cece has arrived in Montana ahead of her wedding to finalize the preparations before the arrival of the guests and Charlie. In Charlie’s absence, his best friend Garrett is there to help. Garrett meets Cece while she is swimming in the lake, and the story unfolds predictably from there. Cece and Garrett quickly shift from mutual antagonism to intrigue. As the wedding approaches, the choices made in fleeting moments set the trajectory for their lives and relationships well into the future.

Puchner skillfully navigates the initial setup of the novel, employing the typical elements of a love triangle with a mix of humor and finesse. Comedic relief is provided by a stubborn mountain goat and a disruptive norovirus outbreak that wreaks havoc on the wedding party. However, it is in the subsequent parts of the book that Puchner truly showcases his literary strength. Instead of focusing on resolving the love triangle, he explores the concept that such resolutions are often illusory. Over the years, as Cece, Charlie, and Garrett evolve into parents and professionals, their feelings toward one another continue to change and deepen.

This ongoing evolution is most evident in the lives of their children, who both act autonomously and bear the burden of their parents’ complex histories. A particularly poignant chapter focuses on Jasper and Lana, the children, highlighting how their personal emotions are influenced by their fragmented perceptions of their parents’ relationship. By extending his narrative over decades, Puchner illustrates that personal growth and change are continuous processes. At the same time, he questions the notion of free will by showing how deeply the children’s lives are affected by their parents’ actions.

In this era, the concept of free will carries different implications. “Dream State” at times resembles a Victorian novel with its rich, detailed world where actions have long-reaching consequences. Unlike Victorian novels which set human follies against a backdrop of stable environments, Puchner’s characters navigate a world that is constantly shifting—ecologically and socially. The narrative documents the gradual changes in the environment, such as wildlife decline and the receding lake, which starkly contrast the lives of the younger generation with those of their parents.

As the narrative progresses, it transforms from a romantic tale into a lamentation for lost youth and a world where that youth could be free and full of potential. In the powerful final chapter, Puchner returns to the beginning to reveal the events that have led the characters to their respective destinies. This closing brings a sharp sense of both personal and generational loss, underscoring the fragility and uncertainty of the future.

In “Dream State,” Puchner draws readers in with a familiar narrative structure but gradually undermines it, presenting a story of deep insecurity and inevitable change. Yet, he manages to tell this story with such engaging warmth and humor that the full impact of his narrative prowess only hits once the book is concluded.
