Engineering Disruptions Affecting Rail Travel Over Easter
Travelers using the railway during the Easter holiday will encounter disruptions due to a significant closure on one of Britain’s main intercity railways.
From Good Friday, April 3rd, to Wednesday, April 8th, there will be no trains running on the west coast mainline between London Euston and Milton Keynes due to scheduled engineering works.
Additionally, the service will be suspended between Preston and Lancaster on April 4th and 5th.
Network Rail has announced that these closures are part of a larger £400 million initiative aimed at enhancing the dependability of the railway. The organization has strategically chosen bank holidays for these operations to minimize disruption, as these periods typically see fewer travelers.
Jake Kelly, Network Rail’s regional director for the north-west and central region, explained, “The extended weekend over Easter provides us with a precious window to carry out significant works that are not feasible over regular weekends. This approach helps us ensure that our teams can make the most of the time available for track work.”
The scheduled work includes laying new railway tracks at Willesden in North London and conducting repairs and upgrades at the Harrow and Wealdstone station.
In Buckinghamshire, a bridge in Ledburn will receive additional reinforcements to shield it from future damage.
Recalling last year’s scenario, Network Rail had previously closed the west coast mainline for four days during the Easter period.
Kelly highlighted the importance of bank holidays, especially Easter, for family gatherings and assured that efforts are made to keep as much of the network operational while these crucial improvements are carried out.
Beyond these specific locations, the Easter period will see engineers working on over 270 upgrade projects across Great Britain’s rail network.
Avanti West Coast will adjust by operating services between Preston and Carlisle via the scenic Settle-Carlisle line.
Anglo-Scottish services will be rerouted through Dumfries and Kilmarnock from Good Friday to Easter Monday.
At the same time, train services between London Waterloo and Clapham Junction will see reductions, and there will be no train services between Winchester and Southampton in Hampshire or between Herne Bay and Ramsgate in Kent.
Kelly advises passengers to expect some alterations in service and recommends checking travel plans before setting out.
