Successful Test of Advanced Artillery Round in Arizona
A new type of artillery round capable of hitting targets up to 120 kilometers away, even without GPS, has been successfully tested at the U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona.
Long Range Maneuvering Projectile Fired from Howitzer
The Long Range Maneuvering Projectile (LRMP), developed by General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems, was launched using an M777 howitzer with M231 propelling charges during a test conducted in August, as revealed by the company on Monday.
The LRMP represents a significant advancement in munitions technology, enhancing the capabilities of 155mm artillery systems. This winged, precision-guided projectile is capable of maneuvering mid-flight and accurately descending to hit both stationary and moving targets effectively.
Scott Forney, president of General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems, highlighted the test as a pivotal achievement in the pursuit of cutting-edge solutions for precision artillery. He emphasized the importance of this technology in a press release, stating, “This milestone reflects our commitment to delivering disruptive technologies for precision artillery.”
Forney further noted the increasing importance of cost-effective, mass-produced artillery systems in light of growing threats from sophisticated adversaries and challenging operational environments. “LRMP meets that need while proving its ability to perform in extreme conditions and reshape long-range firepower,” he added in the statement.
Broader Integration and Naval Applications
According to General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems, the LRMP is designed to be compatible with all current artillery platforms in use by the U.S. military. Further expanding its utility, the U.S. Navy awarded a contract to the company in December 2024 to further develop the LRMP for maritime applications.
