Pentagon announces major surge in missile production

Pentagon Strikes Deals with Major Defense Contractors to Boost Missile Production

Today, the Pentagon disclosed the signing of three major agreements with leading defense contractors aimed at increasing the production and supply of missile systems and their components.

The deals, established with Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems, and Honeywell Aerospace, are set to significantly expedite the manufacturing process across a broad spectrum of missile components, including those for ballistic interceptors.

Enhancing the U.S. Military’s Arsenal

Michael Duffey, Under Secretary of War for Acquisition and Sustainment, expressed in a press release that these agreements are crucial steps towards fortifying America’s ‘Arsenal of Freedom’ with great speed and urgency. He emphasized that these strategic moves are designed to grant the U.S. military a sustainable and decisive edge over any potential foes by encouraging industrial investments in production capabilities.

As part of this initiative, Lockheed Martin is set to quadruple the production rates of the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), which recently saw its first combat use in Operation Epic Fury against targets in Iran.

Jim Taiclet, Chairman, President, and CEO of Lockheed Martin, highlighted in his statement the importance of advanced precision fires capabilities provided by systems like the PrSM, which enhance the U.S. military’s long-range strike abilities.

Additionally, Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems will collaborate to significantly increase the production of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptor. BAE Systems also announced a fourfold increase in its annual production rates for THAAD.

Meanwhile, Honeywell Aerospace is set to boost its production of essential missile components. These enhancements include advancements in navigation systems, electronic warfare equipment for fighter jets, Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM), and the Assure actuator that controls missile navigation and maneuvering during flight.

Jim Currier, President and CEO of Honeywell Aerospace, affirmed the company’s commitment to addressing these critical needs swiftly, acknowledging the challenge and the urgency of the situation.

The surge in production of these missile systems and components is pivotal for the U.S. defense strategy, especially in countering aerial threats such as attack drones. The THAAD system is specifically engineered to neutralize intermediate and short-range ballistic missiles that travel at speeds up to 17,000 miles per hour.

The PrSM itself is equipped with advanced GPS features, capable of striking targets approximately 250 miles away. It is compatible with both the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and the M270A2 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS), which are extensively used by the U.S. and its European allies.

Lockheed has also been testing a new variant of the PrSM designed to target and hit moving targets at sea, further expanding the capabilities of U.S. missile technology.
