Stellan Skarsgård, a well-known actor, has expressed strong disapproval of the U.S. president’s plans to incorporate Greenland, describing him as “a little man with delusions of grandeur.”
While attending the European Film Awards this past weekend, Skarsgård, who is currently a top contender for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in “Sentimental Value,” labeled Donald Trump’s endeavors as “ridiculous.”
“Can you believe it?” he questioned Artur Zaborski from the Polish news site Interia. “Here is this small man, overwhelmed by his own power, attempting to dominate the globe,” Skarsgård remarked, referencing Trump’s recent orchestration of the ousting of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.
“He seized control of Venezuela suddenly, and that was for the benefit of Chevron. Next, he’ll target Greenland for its minerals. He’s acting criminally,” Skarsgård asserted.
Originating from Sweden, Skarsgård pointed out that the director of “Sentimental Value,” Joachim Trier, is of Danish and Norwegian descent. Greenland, while self-administered, remains under Danish control regarding defense and foreign affairs.
On Truth Social, Trump advocated for the “full and outright acquisition” of Greenland and warned European Union countries that any military intervention would be met with economic sanctions.
Björk, the iconic Icelandic singer and also a star in several films by Lars von Trier like Skarsgård, has voiced her criticism against the U.S. president and Denmark as well.
On her social media, Björk expressed her support for Greenland’s independence struggle, stating, “I send all my blessings to the Greenlanders in their quest for independence. Icelanders are immensely grateful for their own separation from Denmark in 1944. Had that not happened, my children would be speaking Danish now, and I deeply empathize with the people of Greenland.”
She continued, “The thought of colonialism sends shivers down my spine, and the possibility that my Greenlandic brethren might transition from one harsh ruler to another is horrifying to even consider.”
Skarsgård, who has recently been recovering from a stroke, portrays a weakened film director in Trier’s movie. He also disclosed that there are ongoing discussions to revive Meryl Streep’s character in a potential second sequel to Mamma Mia!. “There are a lot of people working on it,” he shared with People magazine.
