A U.S. Soldier Apprehended at Tanzania-Kenya Border
A U.S. Army soldier was detained by Tanzanian law enforcement on Sunday while trying to enter Tanzania from Kenya, as per a statement from the Tanzanian police.
The detained individual, identified as Charles Onkuri Ongeta, was caught attempting to cross the border in a Toyota Land Cruiser and was found with four CS M68 hand grenades. Ongeta, who holds dual citizenship in Kenya and the U.S., is a 30-year-old sergeant in the U.S. Army.
While Military Times could not independently confirm these details, the U.S. Army has acknowledged that a member of their force has been arrested, though further specifics were not disclosed.
Official Army Response
On Tuesday, U.S. Army Europe and Africa spokesperson, Terry L. Welch, reported that the arrest occurred on November 16, 2025, as the soldier was traveling to Tanzania from Kenya with family members to visit relatives. Welch confirmed that discussions are ongoing between U.S. and Tanzanian authorities to resolve the matter, but stated that no more information on the soldier would be released at the current time.
Political Unrest in Tanzania
Tanzania is currently experiencing significant political turmoil following the presidential election in October. The election saw the barring of key opposition groups, leading to deadly protests. President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who was reelected, has attributed the unrest to foreign agitators, a claim that has been criticized as “unsubstantiated” by at least one human rights organization.
