According to information from the National Institute of Social Security (IMSS), if the disease is diagnosed early and treated in its initial stages, it can be cured in 85% of cases. However, many men avoid annual urological check-ups, which delays the diagnosis.
MEXICO CITY (apro) – In Mexico, cancer ranks as the third leading cause of death and poses a significant public health issue. The Global Cancer Observatory (Globocan) reported in 2020 that prostate cancer had the highest incidence among men in the country; five years on, it remains one of the most common types of cancer among males.
According to data from the National Institute of Social Security (IMSS), early diagnosis and treatment of this disease in its initial stages result in a cure rate of 85% of cases. Nonetheless, many men shy away from annual urological exams, leading to delayed diagnosis of treatable conditions in their early stages.
Beyond regular check-ups, it is crucial to maintain proper care in the area to prevent the development of cancer or other diseases. Certain habits can harm this vital organ, thus, it’s essential to avoid these and strengthen a culture of prevention.
Practices to Avoid for Prostate Health
One of the most harmful habits for prostate health is excessive alcohol consumption. Alcohol irritates the bladder, exacerbates symptoms such as urinary urgency and prostate inflammation, and dehydrates the body. This impacts kidney function and puts pressure on the prostate.
Frequent consumption of red meats and ultra-processed products is linked to a higher risk of inflammation and prostate cancer. Saturated fats and excessive salt can disrupt hormonal balance, which promotes abnormal growth of prostate cells.
In contrast, a diet rich in vegetables, omega-3 fatty acids from fish, and fiber benefits this organ.
Lack of physical activity also negatively impacts prostate health. Sitting for extended periods causes compression in the pelvic area, reducing blood circulation.
Studies have shown that men who lead sedentary lifestyles are at a higher risk of developing benign prostatic hyperplasia or prostate cancer.
To counteract the effects of a sedentary lifestyle, aerobic exercises are recommended, including walking, running, cycling, swimming, hiking, kickboxing, or dancing, among others.
The habit of holding in the urge to urinate and retaining urine for long periods places pressure on the bladder and prostate, increasing the risk of urinary infections and stones. Additionally, it can weaken the pelvic floor muscles, exacerbating issues like incontinence.
Smoking is also linked to an increased risk of developing aggressive prostate cancer, as the toxins from tobacco affect cellular DNA.
Symptoms of Prostate Issues:
- Difficulty urinating.
- Increased need to urinate at night.
- Burning or pain during urination.
- Fever, chills, and general discomfort.
- Discomfort in the lower back, pelvic area, or genitals.
- Erectile dysfunction.
