Development of European Hypersonic Interceptor Advances
PARIS — MBDA, Europe’s leading missile manufacturer, has recently announced that their Hydis project, which aims to develop a European interceptor for hypersonic threats, has chosen to use a solid-propellant rocket motor. The program’s steering committee confirmed the completion of the final concept review milestone this past Friday.
The Hydis project, entering its final year, now shifts its focus towards enhancing critical technologies up to at least Technology Readiness Level 3, as stated by Europe’s Organisation for Joint Armament Co-Operation in a statement also released on Friday. This level of readiness indicates that the project has achieved experimental proof of concept.
Competing European Defense Initiatives
Hydis is one of two major European initiatives aimed at countering hypersonic threats. It is in competition with the Hydef project, which is spearheaded by Germany’s Diehl Defence and coordinated by Spain’s SMS Sistemas de Misiles de España. The European Defence Fund has earmarked €100 million ($114 million) to support the development of an endo-atmospheric interceptor as part of its 2026 work program. Only one of these projects will receive funding.
The completion of the final concept review marks a significant progression towards establishing a European capability to neutralize hypersonic threats, according to the Organisation for Joint Armament Co-Operation (OCCAR). This organization, which manages the program on behalf of France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands, approved what they consider the most promising interceptor concept put forward by the Hydis industrial consortium.
The design of the interceptor is intended to combat various threats, including hypersonic glide vehicles, hypersonic cruise missiles, and maneuvering ballistic missiles. The concept was evaluated against threat models developed by Italy’s Centro Italiano di Ricerca Aerospaziale, France’s Onera, and the Dutch technology institute TNO.
Focus on Terminal Interception Phase
The final concept review specifically concentrated on the terminal phase of interception by the kill vehicle, with OCCAR noting that the program is now set on a clear path towards technological maturation.
Several key contributors in the project include Avio, which worked on the architecture of the solid rocket motor propulsion, ArianeGroup and MBDA’s Roxel on the control mechanism for the final interceptor stage, and Lynred on the terminal infra-red sensor. MBDA has taken the lead in integrating these components into a coherent concept.
Thales contributed performance data for both naval and ground-sensor suites, and GKN Fokker has been involved in integrating the ammunition into the MK41 naval launcher, MBDA detailed.
“This new milestone showcases the consortium’s comprehensive expertise in addressing hypersonic and ballistic threats, supported by a deep understanding of air defense systems,” MBDA stated in their recent announcement.
Funding and Future Directions
The European Defence Fund (EDF) has already allocated €80 million for the three-year duration of the Hydis program, with the four participating countries contributing an additional €60 million. MBDA has received the lion’s share of the EDF funds for Hydis, with over €60 million dispersed across seven MBDA entities involved in the program.
On the other hand, the Hydef project has secured €100 million from the EDF and an extra €10 million from participating nations including Belgium, Germany, Norway, Poland, and Spain. Diehl stands as the primary beneficiary of this funding, receiving €34.7 million.
The Hydef project originally won the EDF competition to develop a hypersonic interceptor in 2022. However, following objections from France and MBDA, who had been investing in hypersonic technologies for years, the European Commission also funded Hydis. At the Paris Air Show in 2023, MBDA unveiled its Aquila concept for a counter-hypersonic interceptor.
Both Hydis and Hydef are integral to the broader European Twister project, which aims to detect, track, and counter hypersonic threats using space-based early warning systems and endo-atmospheric interceptors.
