The Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) has conducted quality tests on various toothpaste brands. Previous analyses have assessed conventional products, those for sensitive teeth, whitening toothpastes, and children’s formulas.
MEXICO CITY (apro).— The Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco), using its National Consumer Protection Laboratory, has tested various toothpastes on the Mexican market to inform consumers about their accuracy and features. The findings, shared in various issues of the Consumer Magazine, provide insights into conventional options, as well as products for sensitive teeth, those with whitening properties, and children’s toothpaste.

In a previous quality study, the agency reviewed 68 adult toothpaste products, including 18 conventional types, 15 designed for sensitive teeth, and 18 whitening formulas. The evaluations focused on checking net content, fluoride levels, pH, and price among other factors.
Findings on Conventional Toothpastes
Within the category of conventional toothpaste, Profeco’s analysis, published in the Consumer Magazine, highlighted that Colgate Maximum Cavity Protection accurately met consumer information and labeling standards. The study verified that its fluoride content was 1,463 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) with a pH of 7.
In the same category, other brands like Briden and Fortident freska-ra 4D also met the necessary information and content requirements. The primary purpose of these products is to clean teeth and prevent cavities by removing bacterial plaque.

What About Toothpaste for Sensitive Teeth?
For consumers looking for toothpaste for sensitive teeth, Profeco’s laboratory examined 15 specific brands. In this segment, it was found that Colgate Total 12 PROFESSIONAL SENSITIVE and Crest PRO-HEALTH SENSI-RELIEF met the evaluated standards.
These toothpastes are formulated with agents that help reduce tooth sensitivity and also contain fluoride for cavity protection. Oral-B Pro-Health and Sensodyne F were also noted for their effectiveness in reported studies.
Analysis of Whitening Toothpastes
In the segment of toothpastes claiming whitening effects, Profeco’s analysis included 18 products. Among the brands that met the evaluated standards were Colgate Luminous White Brilliant White and Sensodyne Technology Novamin.
It is important to note that the study checked the levels of hydrogen peroxide, a whitening agent, which should not exceed 0.1% to ensure that the product is not abrasive to tooth enamel.

The Most Recent Study: Toothpastes for Children
In Profeco’s examination of children’s toothpastes, 33 products were analyzed, of which 30 contained fluoride and 3 did not.
All the children’s toothpastes contained sweeteners to make them more appealing in taste for young users. Profeco warned about the importance of adult supervision during brushing for children under 6 years old to prevent ingestion of the product.
Following this study, the agency initiated administrative processes against some brands for violations of standards. Among the irregularities found were products like Nickelodeon SpongeBob and Zag Herdez Miraculous containing double the fluoride levels declared on their labels and lacking claims like “not abrasive”.
The Agency emphasized that while toothpastes are not considered health supplies and do not require a sanitary registration, they must comply with the “Agreement determining prohibited and restricted substances in the manufacture of perfumery and beauty products”. The agency reiterates the recommendation to consult a dentist to determine the most suitable product for individual needs and to maintain proper oral hygiene, which includes brushing teeth at least three times a day and using dental floss.
