Interception of Russian Spy Planes by U.S. F-16s Near Alaska
The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) reported that U.S. F-16 fighter jets executed intercepts of Russian reconnaissance aircraft near Alaska on consecutive days this past week.
On Wednesday and Thursday, Russian IL-20 surveillance aircraft entered the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), triggering a response from NORAD. This area, while in international airspace, is closely monitored for any incursions that might threaten national security.
NORAD’s response included deploying two F-16 Fighting Falcons and a KC-135 Stratotanker for aerial refueling on Wednesday to track and monitor the movements of the Russian aircraft. The operation was repeated on Thursday with the additional deployment of an E-3 Sentry Airborne Warning and Control System aircraft to aid in the interception and surveillance of the IL-20.
According to NORAD, the Russian planes remained within international airspace throughout their flights and did not enter the sovereign airspace of the United States or Canada.
The Alaskan ADIZ is a buffer zone in international airspace extending from the boundary of Alaska’s territorial skies, where identification and monitoring of aircraft are required for security reasons.
NORAD noted that encounters with Russian military aircraft within the Alaskan ADIZ are routine occurrences and are not generally considered hostile. The most recent previous encounter before these incidents was on July 22. Additionally, there were consecutive days of Russian military flights in the ADIZ in February and another incident in April.
To detect and respond to such incidents, NORAD employs a comprehensive defense system consisting of satellites, fighter jets, and both ground and airborne radars. This network informs U.S. military leaders about any potential threats, enabling them to take necessary defensive measures.
