Germany Seeks Expansion of Missile Production Capabilities
In Cologne, Germany, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has approached top U.S. defense officials with a proposal to initiate the manufacturing of PAC-3 MSE interceptor missiles within Germany. He suggested that establishing an additional production facility would significantly mitigate the current bottleneck in the international supply chain of these crucial air-defense missiles.
During a discussion in Berlin on Wednesday, Pistorius provided further insight into a recent agreement he reached with his American counterpart, Pete Hegseth, at the Pentagon. This pact underlines Germany’s readiness to handle the complete production spectrum of the Patriot missile system, which includes both PAC-2 and PAC-3 interceptors, their launch systems, and potentially other American military hardware that is currently in high demand among allied nations.
Current and Proposed Missile Production in Germany
The German company MBDA is already involved in the production of the PAC-2 interceptors, a product by Raytheon. However, the more sophisticated and costlier PAC-3 MSE interceptors are manufactured by Lockheed Martin. Lockheed Martin has an existing cooperative relationship with the German firm Rheinmetall, which extends into the missile domain.
The feasibility of producing PAC-3 missiles in Germany or elsewhere in Europe largely depends on the willingness of the U.S. government and Lockheed Martin to participate. Any detailed arrangements would also hinge on the nature and extent of the activities planned for overseas operations.
Security and Economic Aspects of Missile Production
The technical specifications of Patriot interceptors are kept confidential to prevent adversaries from developing effective countermeasures. Furthermore, the decision to export the production of these systems involves significant economic considerations, as the Patriot missile system has been a lucrative product for its manufacturers and the U.S. government for many years.
Ukrainian officials reported in July that they had received assurances from U.S. President Donald Trump about the potential to produce Patriot interceptors locally under a licensing agreement, although the specifics of this deal have not been fully disclosed.
Patriot interceptors play a vital role in defending against Russian missiles, which have continuously targeted various cities across Ukraine.
