Unforgettable Dating Disasters Turned Musical
In the realm of disastrous dating tales, a 2017 incident takes a notable spot. A woman on a Tinder date found herself in a cringe-worthy predicament when her bathroom business refused to flush away. Attempting to handle the situation quietly, she ended up stuck between two windows. This embarrassing moment not only became a popular meme but also made news headlines. Inspired by this event, Jamie Morton and James Cooper, known for their involvement in the popular podcast “My Dad Wrote a Porno,” have crafted a musical.
From Screen to Stage with a Twist
The narrative core of the story is preserved in the musical adaptation, albeit with imaginative modifications. The characters, Lucy and Peter, grew up enchanted by Disney films, yet find themselves perpetually unlucky in romance. Lucy is plagued by her sarcastic anti-guardian angel, Miseraie, while Peter deals with his unbearable financier roommate, David. The plot thickens when Lucy and Peter, after connecting on a dating app, decide to meet at a Mexican eatery, each trying their best to impress. Surprisingly, they discover that they might just be the ideal match for each other.
Guided by the voice of Alison Steadman, who serves as a narrator reminiscent of those in romantic comedies, the story unfolds in expected yet delightful ways. The musical boasts a dynamic score by Bryn Christopher and Martin Batchelar, turning the stage into a vibrant celebration of contemporary, albeit embarrassing, love. In one standout song, “Picture Perfect,” Lucy laments the seemingly impeccable lives displayed online. Another number, “Shit!” captures Lucy’s frantic embarrassment vividly. Each musical piece resonates as a hit with the audience.
Recently, the production faced a hiccup when the original actress playing Lucy had to bow out due to an injury sustained during rehearsals. Ambra Caserotti was brought in as a last-minute replacement. Despite the sudden change, Caserotti excels in the role, her voice smooth as silk and her comedic timing impeccable. She forms an endearing and awkward duo with Shane O’Riordan, who plays Peter.
The musical concludes on a note that encourages authenticity, even if it means being known as the infamous “poo girl” from viral internet fame. While the theme might not be groundbreaking, the musical is peppered with clever humor and a sharp wit, reminiscent of Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss’s work in “Why Am I So Single?”. Though the show features its fair share of bathroom humor, those who embrace the theme are likely to find themselves thoroughly entertained.
