Upcoming Changes to John Lewis Partnership Credit Card Rewards
While John Lewis emphasizes its commitment to ensuring customers are not “never knowingly undersold,” those using the company’s Partnership credit card might begin to feel somewhat let down due to impending reductions in the card’s reward structure. Starting this August, cardholders will see significant changes in how they accumulate points through their general purchases.
The points system allows cardholders to earn redeemable vouchers for shopping at John Lewis and its affiliate, Waitrose. Each point is currently valued at 1p.
Revised Earning Structure
Effective from the start of August, there will be a notable decrease in the rate at which points are earned on purchases made outside of the John Lewis and Waitrose stores. Where previously customers earned one point for every £4 spent, they will now need to spend £10 to earn a single point.
This adjustment in the rewards program means that customers will have to either spend more or wait longer to receive the same value in vouchers as before. The new terms are less favorable and extend the time or amount of spending required to earn vouchers.
However, the reward rate for purchases made directly within the John Lewis Group’s stores remains unchanged, continuing at five points for every £4 spent. This means that a £100 expenditure in either John Lewis or Waitrose will still net customers £1.25 in points.
Enhanced Benefits for Loyal Shoppers
Despite the reduction in points for external shopping, John Lewis has introduced improved rewards for its most devoted customers. Over the next three years, during the month of August, these patrons will enjoy triple points on purchases in its department stores and double points on johnlewis.com.
A spokesperson from John Lewis stated that the updates to the rewards program were implemented to maintain a “market-leading” return on spending within its John Lewis and Waitrose stores. “These changes allow us to focus our investments on the rewards our customers value most, along with introducing a new bonus in August to help customers accumulate more points,” they explained.
John Lewis also highlighted that the credit card offers numerous other benefits which are consistently being expanded. These include promotions for double points, exclusive competitions, and special offers from various partners.
Adaptations to Market Standards
The new terms will come into effect on August 1. The company has pointed out that if customers are dissatisfied with these changes, they have the option to close their accounts. The revised “earn rate” for purchases outside John Lewis and Waitrose aligns with similar offerings from other major retailers like Sainsbury’s and Tesco.
This isn’t the first time John Lewis has reduced the benefits of its credit card. In 2020, the points earned for external shopping were already cut from one point per £2 spent to one point per £4 spent.
Retailers frequently use branded credit cards as a strategy to learn more about their customers and to reward loyalty. However, when John Lewis switched its credit card provider from HSBC to NewDay in 2022, it faced backlash as some high-spending customers encountered issues such as rejected applications or reduced credit limits.
