On Monday in New York City, the federal sex trafficking trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs, a prominent figure in the hip-hop industry, commenced with the selection of the jury, a process expected to take several days. Combs, known for his successful music career, has faced various violence-related allegations over the years.

Lawyers are set to give their opening statements and begin witness testimony next week.

Judge Arun Subramanian provided a group of potential jurors a brief overview of the sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy charges against Combs. He emphasized that Combs had entered a not guilty plea and should be considered innocent until proven guilty.

During this, Combs was seated with his legal team, dressed in a sweater, white collared shirt, and grey slacks—attire approved by the judge instead of standard jail clothing. Combs, aged 55, has been detained in a stark federal prison in Brooklyn since his arrest last September. His hair and goatee, now almost fully gray as jail regulations forbid hair dye, marked his appearance.

Unlike other recent high-profile trials involving celebrities, Combs’s trial will not be broadcast live due to federal courtroom regulations against electronic recordings, leaving courtroom sketch artists to depict the proceedings for the public.

The trial is expected to last at least eight weeks. Combs could face decades of imprisonment if found guilty.

During jury selection, several potential jurors acknowledged having seen news coverage of a critical piece of evidence: a 2016 video showing Combs assaulting an accuser in a Los Angeles hotel hallway. One juror called a still image from the video “damning evidence,” but she was ultimately not selected for the jury.

After one juror was excused, Combs requested a bathroom break, mentioning to the judge, “I’m sorry your honor, I’m a little nervous today.”

The 17-page indictment against Combs describes a pattern of abusive behavior spanning two decades, involving women and others, allegedly with the assistance of his entourage and business network employees. Combs and his legal team maintain his innocence, asserting that any group sexual activities were consensual and devoid of coercion or criminal activity.

Prosecutors contend that women were coerced into drug-induced sexual acts with male sex workers in events Combs referred to as “freak offs.” They allege that Combs used a combination of promises to enhance their entertainment careers or threats to cut ties to control the women. The indictment also claims that Combs and his associates resorted to violence, including beatings, kidnapping, and arson, to get what they wanted. In one instance, Combs is accused of having dangled a person from a balcony.

Combs has admitted to one violent incident likely to be discussed in the trial: a 2016 security camera footage captured him attacking his former girlfriend, R&B singer Cassie, in a Los Angeles hotel hallway. Cassie, legally known as Casandra Ventura, filed a lawsuit in late 2023 accusing Combs of years of abuse, including beatings and rape.

The trial marks the most severe in a series of legal challenges Combs has faced. In 1999, he was charged with attacking an Interscope Records executive with a champagne bottle and a chair, but the charges were reduced after the executive requested leniency for Combs, who subsequently attended an anger management class.

That same year, after fleeing a nightclub shooting with then-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez, Combs was acquitted of all related charges in 2001, although a member of his entourage was convicted. In 2015, Combs was charged with assaulting someone with a kettlebell at the University of California, Los Angeles, but claimed self-defense, and the charges were dropped.
