Lewis Capaldi Makes a Surprising Return to the Stage at Edinburgh Charity Event
Lewis Capaldi recently graced the stage for the first time in two years, delivering a surprise performance at a charity concert in Edinburgh aimed at supporting suicide prevention efforts.
The event took place on a Friday night at the Edinburgh Assembly Halls, featuring performances by Tom Walker and Nina Nesbitt, and was organized to benefit the Campaign Against Living Miserably (Calm).
Capaldi had previously stepped away from live performances following his appearance at Glastonbury in 2023, citing anxiety as a significant factor. He officially announced a hiatus on New Year’s Eve of the same year to concentrate on improving his health.
During his break, Capaldi observed noticeable improvements in his condition, including his struggles with Tourette’s syndrome and anxiety, which were exacerbated by his rigorous performance schedule.
On the evening of the concert, Capaldi made an unanticipated appearance on stage with Tom Walker, a decision made at the last moment. Concertgoers were hinted at a special guest performance in addition to the scheduled acts.
Tom Walker expressed his excitement about Capaldi’s participation, as reported by the BBC: “When Lewis confirmed he wanted to do it last minute, I was delighted. We’ve bumped into each other a few times over the years backstage at festivals and events, and he’s a total legend.” Walker also acknowledged the intense pressure the music industry can exert on artists, especially those returning from a hiatus.
The Edinburgh show was the first in a series of three charity events planned to be phone-free, with subsequent shows scheduled for the following Tuesday at Albert Halls in Stirling, and the final event on May 10 at Glasgow’s Old Fruitmarket. Attendees were required to keep their phones in sealed pouches to prevent recording during the performances.
Capaldi, originally from Bathgate, West Lothian, had experienced interruptions during his Glastonbury 2023 performance due to vocal tics. He has been a proactive supporter of Calm, having previously performed a virtual acoustic concert in 2020 to raise funds for the charity.
In 2023, Capaldi explored the mental and physical tolls of fame in the Netflix documentary “Lewis Capaldi: How I’m Feeling Now”.
Reflecting on the significance of the event, Walker remarked, “For [Capaldi] to be able to play a little secret gig in a safe space without all the phones, the noise, and the expectations was perfect. I’m buzzing to have been a part of it.”
