Neurólogos advierten sobre el aumento de productos "milagro" sin validez médica contra el insomnio

Highlighted among these products are supplements and pills marketed as “natural,” miracle sprays or teas, special pillows, eye masks with built-in technology, meditation apps, electronic devices, light-filtering glasses, colored lamps, and more.

MADRID (EUROPA PRESS) – The Sleep Disorders Study Group of the Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN) has issued a warning about the rise of unproven “miracle” products and services targeting individuals suffering from insomnia. These offerings not only constitute a significant financial burden for consumers but may also pose health risks.

This trend not only causes patient frustration due to unmet expectations but also delays the pursuit of legitimate medical assistance, contributing to the persistence of their condition.

“While it’s encouraging to see a growing awareness of the importance of sleep and the efforts to enhance it, there is an increasing prevalence of definitive claims and solutions lacking scientific backing, frequently offering ineffective or medically unsubstantiated remedies. In recent years, there has been a noticeable spike in the range of products and services aimed at those with chronic insomnia,” stated the group’s coordinator, Dr. Celia García Malo.

Among these products are supplements and pills labeled as “natural”, as well as miracle sprays or teas, special pillows, eye masks featuring advanced technology, meditation apps, electronic gadgets, light-filtering glasses, color-changing lamps, and even weekend retreats designed to “cure” insomnia.

Furthermore, she noted that the latest figures indicate that over-the-counter sleep aids sold in pharmacies amounted to a market worth more than 130 million euros in Spain in 2022.

“However, the truth is that none of these products have proven effective in treating this disorder. This is a sector driven by powerful marketing strategies aimed at those experiencing this health issue,” added the specialist.

Insomnia affects up to 15 percent of the adult population in Spain chronically, impacting their quality of life, work performance, and increasing the risk of developing other conditions such as depression, anxiety, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

THE IMPORTANCE OF CONSULTING A PROFESSIONAL

That is why SEN specialists stress the importance of consulting qualified health professionals for an accurate diagnosis and treatment of insomnia, which should be approached as a medical disorder. Sometimes, other sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, or circadian rhythm disorders might be present and require specific attention.

“After evaluating an insomnia patient and ruling out other potential sleep-related pathologies, cognitive-behavioral therapy is considered the first-line treatment. Many insomnia sufferers could benefit from this approach, which is focused on restoring normal sleep patterns,” explained García Malo.

She emphasized that cognitive-behavioral therapy goes beyond basic sleep hygiene advice, necessitating personalized assessment as each individual has unique characteristics and needs.

The expert also acknowledged that access to this treatment is still insufficient to meet the high demand, a situation that requires ongoing effort and advocacy from the scientific community.

“In certain cases, along with considering cognitive-behavioral therapy, it may also be necessary to employ pharmacological treatment, but always under medical supervision. It is clear that insomnia cannot be resolved with quick fixes or miracle products,” stated the group’s secretary, Dr. Ana Fernández Arcos.

She further stressed that insomnia is a complex disorder that should be evaluated within the context of a comprehensive clinical history, identifying triggering and associated factors and delving into its underlying causes, and that “only in this way” can solutions be provided that tackle the problem at its root and reduce the risk of becoming chronic.

Finally, the society’s specialists urge the public to be skeptical of misleading advertising and not to be swayed by trends or promises lacking scientific foundation.
