Ravyn Lenae, originally from Chicago, has been enchanting the alternative R&B scene since the mid-2010s. An artistic soul from her days in art school, her unique, slightly pop-infused style first gained significant attention when her Crush EP was produced by indie sensation Steve Lacy in 2018. This evening in Manchester, her distinctive stage presence is complemented by an unexpectedly youthful and eclectic crowd, packed tightly near the stage, their outfits a nod to early 2000s fashion, all eager for even the slightest interaction with Lenae. Accompanied by a guitarist, drummer, and a backing track, she makes a dynamic entrance with the rhythm-driven track “Sticky,” her hair dramatically swept up by a strategically placed wind machine.
Her performance includes several tracks from her 2024 album “Bird’s Eye,” which are warmly received by the audience. The new songs mark a distinct evolution from her previous work, with playful, upbeat dub influences in “Candy” and the deeply emotional ballad “Love Is Blind.” She expresses her personal heartache through heartfelt lyrics, questioning, “How do you love me if you leave me behind?” However, some of the slower, more introspective songs from the album, like “Pilot,” seem to lose some energy. Despite this, Lenae shares intimate reflections about her journey and growth as an artist, sprinkling her performance with encouraging words and a message of perseverance: “Stay the course. Time is a gift.”
Still, it’s her older tracks like “Free Room,” with its deep house vibes, and “4 Leaf Clover,” known for its glitchy beats, that provoke the loudest applause from the crowd. Yet, the standout moment comes when “Love Me Not,” a hit from “Bird’s Eye,” infuses a touch of country revival into the set, leaving the catchy chorus, “I wish you were right here,” lingering in the air long after the concert ends. While her fans clearly cherish her, it appears that Lenae might still have more to show. Perhaps a fuller live band and less reliance on pre-recorded tracks, along with a bit more flair, could truly highlight her considerable talent and ambition.
