It’s often mentioned that the cast of the new Saturday Night Live UK is filled with newcomers, which has been a major talking point during its celebrated first week. However, insiders from the comedy and theater scenes will recognize many of these faces, particularly George Fouracres. Known from his popular “What kind of Irish is your grandad?” sketch and his portrayal of a beleaguered Keir Starmer, Fouracres has built a significant reputation over the past ten years. At 36, he has impressively straddled roles in sketch comedy, solo performances, and even Shakespearean roles at the Globe Theatre, including a notable stint as Hamlet. “George’s success this week didn’t come as a shock to those of us who’ve followed his career from the start,” remarked Phil Wang, a comedian and former sketch partner. “It was only a matter of time before he got the broader recognition he deserves,” Wang added.
My first exposure to Fouracres was in 2015 when he was part of Daphne, a sketch trio emerging from the Cambridge Footlights, along with Wang and Jason Forbes. “Right from the start, George had an incredible knack for comedic timing, tone, and instinct,” Wang explained. “Even in university, when I would write roles for him like Long John Silver in a Footlights pantomime, he would bring something special to the performance, often surpassing my expectations.” Daphne gained attention on the fringe circuit, eventually earning a radio series on BBC Radio 4, with Fouracres consistently standing out, whether as a pirate, a sinister Willy Wonka, or an intense northern parody of Daphne from Frasier.
“In his everyday life, George is rather slow-paced, but on stage, he transforms entirely, unleashing a torrent of energy into every character he plays,” Wang observed. Following Daphne, Fouracres ventured into solo work with Gentlemon, a reflective piece on his working-class roots in the Black Country. This project revealed a different facet of his talent, focusing on class and culture with a poignant and personal touch.
Fouracres’ talents eventually caught the attention of Sean Holmes, the associate artistic director at Shakespeare’s Globe, leading to a series of roles ranging from the comedic to the dramatic, including Puck and a youthful Falstaff. “It’s wonderful to see George getting the recognition he deserves. He’s quite the genius,” Holmes stated. “His natural intelligence and adaptability make him a standout, reminiscent of the versatile clowns of Shakespeare’s day,” he added.
Holmes acknowledged that their production of Hamlet with Fouracres wasn’t universally loved but did solidify Fouracres’ reputation as a rising star. Time Out London praised the performance as “a wild, wild ride,” highlighting Fouracres’ star quality. “Calling someone Shakespearean means they’re versatile, present, and passionately intelligent—qualities George possesses in abundance,” Holmes explained.
Fouracres’ next surprising role was as Andrew Lloyd Webber in the musical satire by comedic duo Flo & Joan. His portrayal in this irreverent yet tender show was another testament to his dynamic abilities. Discussing the production, Nicola and Rosie Dempsey of Flo & Joan noted, “George isn’t just an incredible comedian; he’s a phenomenal actor too. His audition moved us to tears, and he brought depth to a role that exceeded our original vision.”
With SNL UK, Fouracres is now reaching a wider audience, showcasing his unpredictable yet compelling style, drawing comparisons to SNL’s original wild card, John Belushi. As the season progresses, more cast members will likely emerge into the spotlight, but George Fouracres’ singular career trajectory and vibrant performances make it clear that his time to shine is now—and likely for many moments to come.
