Nick Mohammed introduced his latest stage production, Show Pony, during a tour in the spring, already having completed filming for The Celebrity Traitors. On stage, he alluded to his participation in the show with a hint of mischief, leaving an impression on at least one viewer that he would likely excel. Given Mohammed’s background as a comedian who also performs magic and displays impressive mental sharpness, his success on a television show centered around deceit and subtlety seemed almost expected.
Unexpectedly, rather than claiming victory, Mohammed’s time on Traitors ended in a memorable loss, where he famously lost a near win, to the shock of his close ally, rugby player Joe Marler. Nevertheless, this event marked a significant turning point for Mohammed, who I had long considered “comedy’s best kept secret.” His name has now become widely recognized, a transition that is particularly gratifying for those who have been tracking his career since his debut in the early 2010s as part of one of the UK’s trendiest comedy agencies.
This agency, known as the Invisible Dot, was also responsible for launching Tim Key. It was known for its unique, cool stand-up aimed at university graduates, a style which Mohammed himself admitted in 2015 he didn’t always find amusing. His comedic tastes were more aligned with mainstream influences, citing inspirations such as Some Mothers Do ’Ave ’Em, French & Saunders, and even the figure skaters Torvill and Dean. Fresh from completing his PhD in seismology, Mohammed’s fit within the contemporary comedy scene was uncertain.
He made his mark with a mix of performances, often portraying his pompous alter ego Mr Swallow, a character now performing as Houdini with impressive escapology acts; and in other works, leading a spoof Dracula musical alongside cohorts David Elms and Kieran Hodgson. Additionally, he created simpler shows that blended PowerPoint presentations, magic tricks, and flamboyant character comedy. The real identity of Mr Swallow, as well as Mohammed’s own persona, remained largely unexplored as he rarely performed as himself.
Meanwhile, Mohammed became a recognizable, albeit understated, presence on television in series like Miranda and Stath Lets Flats, and in his cybercrime comedy Intelligence with David Schwimmer. His fame surged with viral videos from his appearances on 8 Out of 10 Cats, including his humorous rendition of the Jurassic Park theme song. However, his role in the hit series Ted Lasso, where he played the timid kit man turned antagonist Nate, significantly boosted his profile.
Prior to The Celebrity Traitors, the 45-year-old’s progression from sitcom fame to beloved national figure was fraught with challenges. His skit at the 2024 Bafta awards left the audience puzzled, making headlines for the wrong reasons, and a major performance of his Charles Dickens parody A Christmas Carol(ish) in the West End was marred by technical issues and an emotional breakdown on opening night.
However, this unique and versatile artist has now effectively secured a spot in the public’s heart through unlikely means, which seems fitting for someone of his distinctive style. For those observing the comedy scene, it will be intriguing to watch how this newfound public affection influences Mohammed’s live performances. Show Pony, still on tour, provides a particularly thrilling experience as it allows glimpses of the real Mohammed behind the character of Mr Swallow, exploring his personal and professional background for the first time.
For those unfamiliar with Mohammed’s work, Show Pony comes highly recommended. Despite his fears expressed on Traitors Uncloaked that his actions on the show might not sit well with all viewers, those familiar with his career are likely to disagree. Mohammed has proven himself a captivating entertainer, and his rising fame is well-deserved.
