Struggling Homeowner vs. Ovo: The Battle Over a Real Gas Meter

June 19, 2025

I can’t persuade Ovo that my gas meter really does exist

Utility Provider Claims Gas Meter Is Unregistered at Long-term Resident’s Home

After transitioning to a new account management system, Ovo Energy inadvertently erased my gas meter account, revealing that the meter was apparently never registered to my address. Despite living at this location for 15 years and consistently paying for gas, this oversight has now come to light.

A communication from the network operator indicated that I am responsible for any resulting deficit, a prospect that is quite alarming.

As a dyslexic single parent, handling my household’s finances is already a challenge, and this issue has remained unresolved for six months. Currently, I’m only being billed for electricity, causing my unpaid gas charges to accumulate. Ovo Energy has even suggested that reinstating my gas service might not be possible.

My primary goal is to have the gas meter registered so I can properly manage this account and avoid the stress of potentially huge unforeseen charges.

It appears you own what’s known as a “shipperless meter,” meaning your meter’s identification number vanished from the national records, as explained by Ovo Energy. This anomaly resulted in the closure of your account. However, after investigating the issue, the company managed to rectify this within a few days and has assured that you will not be billed for the period your account was inactive. Your account has been restored, the meter is now officially registered, and you have been compensated with £100.
