Swedish Navy Intercepts Drone Near French Aircraft Carrier in Malmö
In a recent incident off the coast of Malmö, the Swedish Navy successfully intercepted a drone believed to be of Russian origin. This event occurred approximately 13 kilometers away from France’s nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, which was docked in the port of Malmö, as reported by Sweden’s defense chief.
During a routine patrol in the Oresund Strait, a body of water that divides Denmark and Sweden, a vessel of the Swedish Navy spotted an unmanned aerial system moving suspiciously close to the French aircraft carrier.
The Swedish Armed Forces acted promptly upon detecting the drone, deploying countermeasures that led to the loss of contact with the device. Following this encounter, no further drones were detected in the vicinity, according to an official statement from the military.
Defense Minister Pål Jonson, in a conversation with SVT Nyheter, suggested that the drone was likely Russian, especially since a Russian military vessel was noted nearby during the incident, which took place on February 26. Jonson described the event as a potential infringement on Swedish airspace and has since initiated an investigation to confirm whether a violation occurred.
Details about the incident remain limited as the Swedish Armed Forces have not disclosed further information.
Sweden Enhances Drone Defense Capabilities
Last month, Sweden announced significant upgrades to its drone defense technology, including the acquisition of advanced remote-controlled electronic warfare systems. These systems are equipped with drone detection sensors that can be installed on naval ships or ground units.
Although the exact identity of the Russian vessel has not been officially confirmed, several maritime monitoring groups have identified possible Russian-flagged ships in the area around the time of the drone incident. Notably, one of the vessels identified was the Sparta IV, a cargo ship under U.S. sanctions known for transporting military equipment between Syria and Russia.
Guillaume Vernet, a spokesperson for the French General Staff, confirmed that the Swedish countermeasures effectively repelled the drone, ensuring the safety of the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier without affecting its operational activities.
The deployment of the French aircraft carrier is part of ongoing and forthcoming NATO exercises, including the Orion 2026 activities scheduled in the North Atlantic and Baltic regions. These exercises began earlier this month and are set to continue until March.
