The U.S. Navy’s Next Stealth Fighter Selection Nears Announcement
The Pentagon is close to revealing the chosen manufacturer for the U.S. Navy’s next-generation stealth fighter, with an announcement potentially being made in the next few weeks or even sooner, according to two sources familiar with the situation.
Boeing and Northrop Grumman are the main contenders vying for this highly lucrative contract, expected to generate tens of billions of dollars throughout its duration, akin to previous defense acquisition programs of similar magnitude.
Challenges Surrounding the F/A-XX Program
The F/A-XX project, the official designation for the new fighter jet initiative, has faced numerous setbacks, including funding issues and delays spanning several years. Some Pentagon leaders previously proposed postponing the program by up to three years due to concerns over engineering capabilities and supply chain constraints. However, Congress intervened, allocating $750 million to the F/A-XX initiative in a substantial tax-cut and spending package enacted in 2025, followed by an additional $1.4 billion allocated for fiscal year 2026.

Given China’s swift advancement in deploying what it claims to be sixth-generation combat aircraft, the importance of moving forward without further delays is critical. An official noted that any postponement could leave the Navy ill-equipped with outdated fighters in the 2030s, jeopardizing its ability to maintain power projection in competitive scenarios.
A representative from the Pentagon stated, “Efforts to finalize the F/A-XX contract are ongoing and an announcement is expected soon. No further details can be provided at this time.”
Features and Future of the Navy’s New Fighter Jet
The forthcoming stealth jet is set to become a vital component of the Navy’s Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) system, intended to succeed the decades-old F/A-18E/F Super Hornet series. This new fighter is anticipated to boast enhanced stealth features, increased range and endurance, and seamless integration with unmanned combat vehicles and other naval air defense systems. The introduction of the first batch of these new jets is scheduled for the 2030s, although the F/A-18s are expected to remain operational into the 2040s.
