On Friday, the U.S. military supported Israel in defending against missiles launched by Iran. This came in response to Israel’s extensive aerial bombardment targeting Iranian military leaders and their nuclear facilities the previous day.

A defense official from the U.S. confirmed the engagement but did not specify which American resources were utilized or the number of interceptors deployed.

Prior to the incident, two U.S. destroyers were positioned in the eastern Mediterranean by the U.S. European Command to potentially counteract missile threats, according to another defense source.

These sources requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of discussing military strategies.

The Israel Defense Forces reported that Iran retaliated by firing multiple missiles, including at civilian targets, as a counteraction to Thursday’s strikes.

Independently, Israel had attacked key Iranian military figures and nuclear scientists in large-scale airstrikes throughout Iran. These strikes were described by Tel Aviv as preventative measures against Iran’s rapidly progressing nuclear ambitions, despite diplomatic efforts by the Trump administration to forestall such conflicts.

President Donald Trump, shortly before Iran’s retaliatory attack, reiterated his call for Iran to continue negotiations. He emphasized that the acquisition of a nuclear weapon by Iran would be intolerable for the U.S.

Trump expressed his frustrations on his Truth Social media platform, stating, “I gave Iran chance after chance to make a deal.”

The White House confirmed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had a telephonic conversation with Trump on Friday.

Typically, the U.S. maintains a military presence of about 30,000 troops in the Middle East, including strategic deployments in Israel. However, due to escalating regional tensions, the number of U.S. military personnel has recently increased to approximately 40,000.

In an earlier campaign targeting Houthi rebels in Yemen, the U.S. enhanced its military capabilities in the Middle East, including air defense systems, to safeguard American forces against potential Iranian attacks.

The recent exchange of strikes marks a continuation of the heightened hostilities between Iran and Israel, following Iran’s missile attacks in previous months. The U.S. military supported Israel during these incidents, and subsequent Israeli responses destroyed Iran’s advanced air defense setups.

The ongoing direct military actions by Israel, which are expected to persist, heighten the risk of a broader conflict potentially involving U.S. forces.

Concerns have been raised by U.S. analysts and former defense officials regarding Israel’s potential objective of instigating a regime change in Iran.

Netanyahu ominously warned on Friday, “More is on the way.”
