Lithuania to Pay for US Military Base: Will Cover Costs if Washington Establishes One

VILNIUS — Lithuania’s prime minister, Mindaugas Sinkevicius, said Tuesday that his country is prepared to fund the establishment of a permanent U.S. military base on Lithuanian soil if Washington agrees to create one.

President Donald Trump signaled on Monday that he would be open to examining Lithuania’s request, calling the Lithuanians friends and saying the proposal would be looked at.

Lithuania, which sits on NATO’s and the EU’s eastern flank, shares borders with Russia and with Belarus, a close Moscow ally. Since 2019 the United States has maintained an armored battalion of roughly 1,000 soldiers in Lithuania, rotating the unit so troops cycle in and out every few months.

Sinkevicius told reporters he raised the idea of converting that rotating deployment into a permanent stationing during a meeting last month in Vilnius with John Coale, an envoy of President Trump.

On his Facebook page the prime minister said he is pleased the suggestion is receiving serious consideration, describing a fixed U.S. presence as an essential measure for deterrence and national security.

He added that the only remaining step is a political decision by allied leaders to make the deployment permanent, and emphasized that Lithuania stands ready to assume the financial burden required to host the troops.
