The BBC has announced that “The Celebrity Traitors” is set to come back for a second season in 2026 following its highly successful initial run, which set new viewership records.

The upcoming season will again be hosted at Ardross Castle in Scotland by Claudia Winkleman, who will introduce a fresh group of celebrities to compete in this ultimate challenge of deception and loyalty.

Alan Carr emerged as the winner of the show’s inaugural season last week. In a surprising finale, he confessed to being a traitor against fellow competitors comedian Nick Mohammed and television historian David Olusoga, who were loyalists, thereby securing the entire prize fund of £87,500 for his chosen charity.

Kalpna Patel-Knight, BBC’s head of entertainment, praised the production company Studio Lambert for their exceptional work, stating that “The Celebrity Traitors” has thoroughly enthralled the British public and marked itself as a standout show of the year with record-breaking audience participation.

Patel-Knight added, “In 2026, we will open the castle doors once more to see which celebrities can outwit, outplay, and outlast others in an even more gripping second series.”

According to the BBC, the first episode of the series drew an unprecedented 14.8 million viewers within 28 days, making it the most-watched single episode of television this year, while the series finale attracted an average of 11.1 million viewers, peaking at 12 million.

The show has become the largest unscripted series in the UK since 2021.

A report on the show’s economic impact revealed that the series has contributed £21.8 million to Scotland’s economy since its inception in 2022, reflecting its success in both the UK and US markets.

“The Celebrity Traitors” has also been adapted in several other countries, including Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, Greece, and India.

In conjunction with the second season, new episodes of the companion podcast “The Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked” will be produced by Platform Media and made available through BBC Sounds, BBC Two, and iPlayer.

The first season concluded dramatically with traitors Cat Burns and Alan Carr, and loyalists Joe Marler, Mohammed, and Olusoga. Burns was the first traitor to be discovered and eliminated, followed by Marler who was mistakenly identified as a traitor and also removed. The remaining players voted to conclude the game, leading to Carr’s confession as a traitor, an admission he described as agonizing. The season finale was lauded in a Guardian review as a masterful end to the series.

Notable celebrities like Stephen Fry, Celia Imrie, Tom Daley, Paloma Faith, and Jonathan Ross featured in the first season, with memorable moments such as Imrie inadvertently farting during a mission and Carr openly ‘killing’ his friend Faith at the first chance.

The competition began with 19 celebrities who aimed to identify the traitors among them while engaging in various challenges to add money to the prize pot. The stakes were high as if a traitor remained undetected until the end, they would take home the entire prize, leaving the loyalists with nothing.

Potential Celebrities for Season Two

Gareth Southgate – The former England manager and fan of the series, hinted at a possible participation during a conversation with Chris Evans on Virgin Radio, sparked by their own version of the game during the Qatar World Cup in 2022.
