Boeing Secures Contract for Advanced Bunker-Buster Bombs
On Tuesday, the U.S. Air Force announced the awarding of an exclusive contract to Boeing for the production of advanced bunker-buster bombs, intended to replenish stocks utilized during the attacks on Iranian nuclear sites in June of the previous year.
A justification notice, which was made public on Thursday, explained that the Air Force opted for a sole-source contract with the American defense behemoth because it is the sole producer of the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator. The notice highlighted that selecting another supplier would cause significant delays that could compromise the Air Force’s operational capability.
The document detailed the urgency of the contract, stating, “This action is critical to replenish operational readiness… and to guarantee that the Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) has the necessary equipment to execute strategic contingency plans across all Combat Commands.”
The GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator, weighing 30,000 pounds, is a precision-guided bomb designed to annihilate heavily fortified or underground facilities, such as subterranean laboratories or military bunkers. The bomb features a robust steel casing capable of drilling approximately 200 feet through dense materials before releasing a substantial conventional explosion.
During a mission targeting Iran’s Fordo nuclear enrichment facility, multiple units of these massive bombs were deployed from B-2 Spirit stealth bombers.
Although the specific cost of the recent GBU-57 procurement was not disclosed in the public documents, an indication was given that the financial commitment exceeds $100 million.
The contract includes the acquisition of additional tail kits, which are essential for guiding the bombs to their precise targets. The initial deliveries of these kits and other critical components of the weapon system are scheduled to commence in January 2028.
