U.S. Troops Pulling Out of Germany Amid Increasing Tensions

The Pentagon has declared that the United States will be pulling 5,000 troops from Germany, a key NATO ally, as disagreements over the conflict in Iran cause strain between President Donald Trump and European countries.

Earlier in the week, President Trump had hinted at reducing military presence after a confrontation with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Merz criticized the U.S. on Monday, claiming the U.S. was being publicly embarrassed by Iran in ongoing negotiations to end a two-month-long conflict. He also questioned the absence of a clear withdrawal strategy from the U.S.

A high-ranking Pentagon official, who chose to remain anonymous, criticized the recent statements from Germany as “inappropriate and unhelpful.”

“The president is justifiably responding to these obstructive comments,” the official stated.

The Pentagon expects the troop withdrawal process to be completed within the next six to twelve months. Currently, Germany houses around 35,000 active-duty U.S. soldiers, which is the highest number in any European country.

According to the official, this reduction will return U.S. troop numbers in Europe to approximately what they were before 2022, which was before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine prompted an increase in troops under then-President Joe Biden.

The decision also aligns with the Trump administration’s objective for Europe to take a greater role in its own security. However, this move is also seen as a sign of Trump’s readiness to react sharply to what he perceives as a lack of support from allies.

Last week, Reuters reported on an internal Pentagon email that discussed potential punitive measures against NATO allies seen as not supporting U.S. efforts in the Iran conflict. This included proposals such as suspending Spain from NATO and reevaluating the U.S. stance on Britain’s claim to the Falkland Islands.

Strained Relations with Germany

While Trump has reprimanded various NATO allies, he has specifically targeted Germany for not deploying naval forces to assist in opening the Strait of Hormuz during the ongoing conflict.

This crucial waterway for global oil shipments has remained nearly closed, leading to significant market instability and disruptions in global energy supplies.

Chancellor Merz pointed out that neither Germany nor other European nations were consulted before the U.S. and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28. He expressed his concerns directly to President Trump following the onset of hostilities.

“The president has explicitly expressed his dissatisfaction with the rhetoric of our allies and their lack of support for U.S. operations that are in their interest,” stated the senior Pentagon official.

Trump has consistently expressed a desire to reduce the U.S. military footprint in Germany. He attempted to initiate troop reductions towards the end of his first term, but the plans were not implemented. After losing the election, President Biden reversed these reduction plans.

Trump’s announcement on Wednesday about reassessing U.S. troop levels in Germany came as a surprise to German military officials, who disclosed to Reuters that they had had positive meetings at the Pentagon earlier that day.

These officials emphasized that Germany has contributed more to the U.S. efforts in Iran than other allies by allowing the use of military bases and approving overflights. Germany is also the location of a major U.S. military hospital in Landstuhl.

Following Trump’s decision, a brigade combat team currently stationed in Germany will be withdrawn, and a long-range fires battalion, which was scheduled to be deployed to Germany later this year under the Biden administration, will now not be deployed, as per the official.
