Defense Collaboration Between Germany and the UK
In a significant development, Germany and the United Kingdom have entered into their first defense agreement since the Second World War. This accord, which was recently signed, pledges mutual defense assistance in the event of an attack on either nation. It marks a significant step in enhancing defense cooperation between the two countries.
Alongside the formal signing, discussions revealed an upcoming phase concerning the delivery of long-range weapons to Ukraine. Following this announcement, the Russian Foreign Ministry reiterated its threats, suggesting that such actions could provoke military responses against European nations.
The “Kensington Treaty”
The defense pact, officially named the “Kensington Treaty,” was formalized in London this past Thursday. It encompasses a wide array of commitments including the cooperation in military-industrial projects and educational exchanges between Germany and the UK. Most notably, it obliges the NATO allies to provide military support to each other in the event of an armed attack.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz hailed this occasion as a “turning point in Anglo-German relations.” During the discussions, he also highlighted conversations with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer regarding the necessity for advanced long-range weaponry for Ukraine. Merz assured the press that Ukraine would soon receive significant enhancements in this regard.
Both leaders expressed their ongoing commitment to supporting Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Shortly after these declarations, Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, reiterated the possibility of Russia targeting Western European locations if Ukraine is supplied with long-range weaponry. Quoting her remarks from Tass, the Russian news agency, she indicated a forceful response to any escalation, specifically referencing potential German plans to provide Ukraine with Taurus long-range cruise missiles. She stated that Russia reserves the right to target military installations in countries that engage against it.
Expanding Defense and Cooperation Projects
The newly signed Treaty of Friendship and Bilateral Cooperation includes a list of 17 collaborative projects between the UK and Germany. Prominent among these is the development of a sophisticated deep precision strike weapon, capable of reaching targets over 2,000 kilometers away, planned to be completed within the next ten years. According to a German government document, this weapon system is set to be one of the most advanced of its kind.
Further cooperation includes addressing submarine threats in the Northern Seas, developing doctrines and vehicles for unmanned aerial systems, and strengthening NATO’s eastern defenses.
The German government emphasized the intention to foster a robust and enduring defense partnership between the UK and Germany.
Additionally, the treaty will boost joint military export initiatives, potentially increasing international sales of collaboratively produced military hardware such as Eurofighter Typhoon jets and Boxer armored vehicles. Previously, stringent German export regulations had hindered certain deals, like the proposed sale of Eurofighters to Saudi Arabia.
This treaty is a continuation of the rapid defense integration across Europe, a movement accelerated by Russia’s aggressive actions in Ukraine since 2022 and further spurred by the political dynamics in the United States with President Donald Trump’s administration. It underscores the pivotal role of the E3—Germany, the UK, and France—in European defense strategies. This follows closely on the heels of another comprehensive defense treaty signed between the UK and France, laying the groundwork for a potential European nuclear defense strategy.
